It took a lifetime of passionate research of the icons of Art Deco to bring such a comprehensive collection of the most extraordinary furniture produced in the 1920s together in one place. Every detail has a story attached, which the owner will surely tell you: armchairs designed by Francis Jourdain, a dresser brought back from Vietnam which struggles to hide its colonial past ... Here there are panels recovered from the Mamounia site, there a collection of telephone handsets straight out of a bygone era. The story is told in the clean design of the chairs directly opposite the large wooden bookcase, cubic in outline but elegant in style, from which you can browse through the many art books on the art of the period, to extend the aesthetic pleasures surrounding you. Even the lift contributes to creating the characteristic luxurious, sophisticated and carefree atmosphere.
It is located ten minutes from the airport, has three golf courses nearby and is within the historic part of the Medina. Perfectly placed in the city of Marrakech, its flowing design punctuated by a few touches of Moroccan crafts and the architectural style of the palace is in perfect equilibrium. You'll see handmade Zelliges natural clay tiles and Tadelakt, the decorative plaster made from lime specific to the Marrakesh region, adorn redecorated patios and the sublime outdoor pool surrounded by ramparts of the Kasbah and crowned with two ancient Burmese jars. It is simply spectacular.
If you can, I strongly advise you to jump at the chance of being one of the lucky few who stay in this exclusive place. With only ten rooms, it is an intimate home. Each room is different, and comes equipped with a luxurious bathroom and organised according to the principles of Feng Shui. This provides optimum comfort with natural materials like Makassar ebony wood which gave its name to the hotel, antique furniture, paintings and sculptures. Our firm favourites are the pieces by Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann who, for us, epitomises the glamour of the French Art Deco style of the 1920s. He was a firm champion of Art Deco in the interpretation of the arts of the new century. We also enjoyed the influence of the more feminine Sonia Delaunay, who is represented in the hot tub and a TV-mirror.
In this charming hotel, the rest of your body will be pampered as well as your aesthetic senses. In the basement, magically lit by natural light, the spa at Villa Makassar offers services worthy of much larger institutions. It boasts an indoor pool, two steam rooms, a hot tob, a beauty parlour and massage area for the most relaxing of times. All this is in an Art Deco atmosphere which is completely in keeping with the rest of the hotel.
Gastronomic pleasures are also a high priority at Villa Makassar. In addition to the breakfast that delights your taste buds every morning, the chef offers Oriental and international cuisine using fresh local produce that can be enjoyed wherever you like, whether in the in living rooms, on the patios or on the five-hundred-square-metre terrace. The latter, with a view of the Atlas Mountains, is a must at sunset! The mountains and the city then take on shades of red, pink and saffron, making you understand why Marrakesh has the sweet nickname ‘Red City’. Being here brings back memories of previous times in Medina: the hubbub of souks, the smell of the spice merchants, décor worthy of the Thousand and One Nights of the ancient Koranic School of Medersa Ben Youssef and the beautiful Moroccan architecture of the Bahia Palace. In the heart of the Medina in an atmosphere of the twenties, Villa Makassar takes us on a journey through time and remains very much one of the best places to discover VeryChic Marrakech.
