Evocative of 1930s Shanghai, the Dorsett Collection’s East-meets-West aesthetic is well suited to London’s cosmopolitan Shepherds Bush, and tastefully combines oriental artistic accents with the glamour and opulence of Art Deco style. Through the boom of the roaring 20s and the economic slump of the 1930s, the Art Deco movement flourished, and though the former Pavilion Cinema building has been stylishly renovated, the interior design gives an identifiable nod to the movement. The Dorsett Shepherds Bush is a cool, contemporary space, and a justifiably confident newcomer on London’s hotel scene.

Since my first visit to China, as a travel-hungry teenager, I have held a particular interest in all things oriental. I even studied Mandarin for a short while in an effort to appear less conspicuous when I visited the glittering metropolises of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, but my pronunciation led to more confusion and laughter than any real understanding of the language.

Now, though, I don’t have to travel that far at all to get a taste of the glamorous, hedonistic ambience of Central and Causeway Bay. Dorsett Hotels have confidently launched their first hotel outside of Asia in London’s Shepherds Bush. This area of West London is characterised by a varied mix of residents, whose cosmopolitan nature is matched by the range of nationalities that choose the Dorsett Shepherds Bush as their base for a break in the English capital.

Within the Grade-II listed façade, the Pavilion Cinema has been drastically renovated, with the exterior dominated by glass, steel, and exposed brick, and the interior characterised by sleek materials and a very high standard of finish. The lobby is quite cool and functional, but redeemed by the polite, professional service at the front desk. Naturally, as a Londoner, I tested the concierge’s recommendations; they were infallible.

The first great impression of the Dorsett Shepherds Bush came as I strolled through the ground floor lobby and discovered the vast, glass-roofed atrium bar, Jin. Open to six storeys of the hotel - there is no floor numbered ‘4’, as the number is considered a bad omen in Chinese culture, conversely, the top floor of the hotel is numbered lucky 8 – Jin is an opulent spot in which to enjoy a drink or drink in the vibrant atmosphere.

Here, and in the hotel restaurant, Pictures, the international staff are more than happy to take the time to explain the East/West fusion menus. At breakfast, guests tuck into hot options such as a full English, Chinese congee, or pancakes, and the range of cold choices at the buffet was extraordinary. I tucked into my muesli and yoghurt as early morning light streamed in through the skylights. The whole space is bright, airy, and tastefully decorated, with pale grey walls and black lacquer tables. By night, the brass wall-lights and deep velvet dining chairs give the space an intimate ambience, and guests laugh and chatter over huge portions of Asian fusion and English classic cuisine.

At 317 rooms, the hotel isn’t small, but I found the service to be as charming and personable as in a boutique hotel. Fortunately, too, the recent renovation means all rooms are comfortably spacious for a central London hotel. The rooms vary in style, with a choice between Contemporary and Chinese themed; I pushed for a Chinese-themed room and found a refined, elegant, and tranquil space. Chinoiserie wallpaper stretches out behind my studded headboard, and the rest of the room is clean, bright white, with decorative accents in burnished gold. My bathroom is dominated by blonde stone tiles and chrome, with an innovative combined bath-shower wet room that prevented flooding the potentially slippery stone floor. With delectable complimentary toiletries, too, the Dorsett Shepherds Bush demonstrates its meticulous attention to detail.

Swaddled in my fluffy bathrobe, I left my comfortable room in search of the spa. On the top floor, and lit with ethereal (grey, cloudy) natural light from misted skylights, the Pavilion Spa offers guests an indulgent spot in which to unwind. After a successful day’s shopping at nearby Westfield, the largest shopping centre in Europe, guests would be mad not to opt for a restorative massage or soothing pedicure in this elegant space. Health enthusiasts, too, can be kept happy: aside from the well-equipped, 24-hour gym, the hotel also offers training sessions on Shepherds Bush Green, facing the hotel.

Even-numbered rooms face inwards, to the atrium, whereas odd numbers look out and benefit from natural light. At the Dorsett Shepherds Bush, though, where the convivial, cosmopolitan ambience complements its elegant and tasteful design, there’s not a bad room in the hotel.

For music lovers, Shepherds Bush Empire concert venue is just a short walk down the road. This former theatre is an atmospheric and intimate spot to see some great names in concert. Aside from the stalls selling antiques, trinkets and treats, Portobello Market boasts some excellent shops hidden behind the stalls – keep an eye out for Stumper & Fielding, The Hummingbird Bakery, and the still-recognisable filming locations from Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts’s nineties romance, Notting Hill. HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

From London Heathrow:
By train: The Heathrow Express isn’t the cheapest but is certainly the fastest method, taking 15 minutes to London Paddington Station. Tickets are around £26 single (£21 in advance) or £39 return (£34 in advance). Regular train services also run, taking twice the time, for around £10.

By metro: Take the Piccadilly Line (navy blue) towards Cockfosters and alight at Hammersmith. From here, you can either get a bus (72, 220, 283, 295) and get off at Shepherd’s Bush Green, or take the London Underground service to Goldhawk Road or Shepherds Bush Market, before walking to the hotel.

From London Gatwick:
By train: The Gatwick Express to London Victoria runs regularly with a journey time of 30 minutes. Tickets are around £20 single (£10 for children) or £35 return (£18 for children); it is a little cheaper if booked in advance. For around £15 single, Southern Trains operate four times an hour to London Victoria, taking around 35 minutes.

By bus: National Express operates direct coach services to London Victoria once an hour with a journey time of around 90 minutes. Tickets are around £8 single, £15 return.
A low-cost, frequent and non-stop transfer service is also operated by EasyBus from North and South terminals to Earls Court/West Brompton. The journey takes about an hour.

From London City:
By train: Get on the DLR (turquoise line) ten stops to Bank Station. Change at Bank for the Central (red line) towards West Ruislip, and alight at Shepherds Bush. From here, walk to the hotel on Shepherds Bush Green.

By taxi: London City airport is close to central London, therefore a cab will cost around £45.

From London Luton:
By train: A shuttle bus goes to Luton Airport Parkway Station where East Midlands Trains run to London St Pancras/ Kings Cross in 25 minutes. Tickets are around £18 single and £30 return.

By bus: The National Express to London Victoria (about 35 minutes) is around £10 single and £15 return. EasyBus run to Baker Street (60 minutes) which is often cheaper but prices vary.

From London Stansted:
By train: The Stansted Express runs to London Liverpool Street in about 50 minutes, for around £23 single and £33 return.

By bus: The National Express to London Liverpool Street (about 75 minutes) costs £8 single and £15 return. EasyBus go to Baker Street (75 minutes) and is often cheaper but prices vary.

BY TRAIN

From within the UK trains can be found and booked via National Rail. From mainland Europe trains can be found and booked via Rail Europe. Together, the companies Eurostar and Thalys operate high speed train services from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France to London St Pancras International.

The London Underground (known locally as the Tube)

The closest underground station is Shepherds Bush, served by the Central Line, or alternatively the hotel is equidistant between Goldhawk Road and Shepherds Bush Market stops on the Hammersmith & City Line (pink) and Circle Line (yellow).

From Shepherds Bush station, walk down Uxbridge Road and turn left after the Common. The hotel will be on the right hand side.

From Goldhawk Road station, turn left upon exiting the station and then turn right up Goldhawk Road, before taking the second left at the Common. The hotel will be on the left.

From Shepherds Bush Market Station, walk left on Uxbridge Road towards Westfield, then turn right at the Common. The hotel will be on the right.
