The rugged stone cliffs of Spain’s east-coast are very often overlooked, but with such idyllic settings it really shouldn’t be. We began our Costa Brava road trip in the small town of Cadaqués; we walked amongst the small winding streets, in between the white houses that reminded me of being on a Greek island. Our afternoon took us to the fishing villages along the coast near Begur where the sea crashed against the cliff edges and settled on the small, sandy beach. The blue and green colours of the water astonished us each time, but the day was wearing on and we were growing tired, anxiously anticipating our arrival at the Hostal de La Gavina so we could relax and recharge.
We were a happy yet tired couple that appeared to Hostal de La Gavina GL that evening, but we were greeted with an energising smile by the reception and a light and airy lobby that put a twinkle in our eye. We had booked a double room with terrace which lay before us just a few moments after check-in. A lavish large bed covered with ornate bed linen and backed by a shiny wooden headboard lay in the middle of the room, parallel to the doors that led onto out little terrace, facing the azure sea. Every detail was ornate and grand, from the pinstriped walls and pictures that adorned the walls to the laminate flooring and embellished furniture. The ornate style continued into the bathroom which also contained slick finishings and smooth marble tiles.
We made our way to the romantic and classy Candlelight, lured in by the live piano music that we heard from outside. We sat at a table for two, adorned with flickering candles, ready to dig into our tasty Mediterranean meal. Outside we spotted the even more romantically decorated patio, with an elaborate fountain at the centre, maybe we would venture outside on a warmer night as the setting was just divine! As was indeed, the meal. The piano accompaniment lingered in our ears as we left the restaurant and retired to our room.
We awoke early the next day, anxious to get out to the beach and soak up some sun in the postcard perfect surroundings. Not anxious enough to skip breakfast however; we made ourselves comfortable on the breakfast terrace looking out to the sea and feeling the warm morning sun on our skin. The selection for breakfast was colourful and plentiful, and we truly filled ourselves up for the day ahead, savouring every mouthful. Once we were beach ready we made our way down to Sant Pol Beach. The beach was smooth and comfortable yet the rugged rocks on the corners of the bay gave a beautiful contrast.
When lunchtime came and we headed to Restaurant Garbí for a light lunch by the pool. Without the beach breeze and with all the comforts of the hotel nearby, the pool is beautifully decorated with a sculptured statue, and lined with sun beds. There is plenty of space for all and even shaded corners with armchairs for those to sit and enjoy the refreshments of poolside Blue Bar. We also had the choice of heading over to La Terraza Roja, the perfect space to enjoy a quiet refreshing beer, a snack or a cocktail mixed by Pepe, on the pleasant terrace overlooking the tranquil gardens.
The evening came and we had to tear ourselves away from the view we had been appreciating during our whole trip, but not to fear! We were headed for the spa and the spa too had endless views of the Mediterranean. After a warm shower I headed to soak in the misty hammam whilst my husband headed to the scorching sauna. Out we both emerged ready to dive into the indoor swimming pool and be massaged by the bubbles of the jacuzzi.
We spent the evening over dinner excitedly talking about what we would do if we could extend our stay. There was still so much of this region we still hadn’t seen, the pastel houses of Sa Conca, the countryside forests of the region, we could play a game of tennis on the hotel’s court, cycle around the area and even play a round of golf. We were talking only hypothetically of course, but with VeryChic offers why not book a stay that indulges you with a little longer…?
