Neptune Pwani Beach Resort ★★★★★

Five-star beach paradise in Zanzibar.

Exceptional
9 /10
By Hannah Wright, VeryChic correspondent
Zan-zi-bar, three syllables that evoke paradise, culture and exoticism all at once. Steeped in Swahili history and flanked by some of the continent’s best coral beaches, the magic of Africa manifests itself here the most spectacularly. Known as the Island of Spices, it is an archipelago of tropical islands that lie just off Tanzania’s coast. It’s a laidback paradise replete with coconut palms, multi-coloured coral reefs and stretches of golden sand lapped by warm turquoise waters. Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, warmly welcomes you to Neptune Pwani Beach, a luxurious resort perched on the north-eastern peninsula of the island.

Darajani Market, Market Street, Stone Town, Zanzibar
  • Earning its name as a former prison for slaves and a quarantine station for Zanzibar, Prison Island is now home to giant land tortoises, an endangered species imported from the Seychelles as a gift from the government. The island is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, making it ideal for snorkelling and spotting flora and fauna.
  • Perched on top of a Swahili mansion in an intricately carved wooden gazebo, Emerson's Tea House serves cocktails with 360-degree views over Stone Town. Mojitos are followed by multicourse dinners with an emphasis on seafood, spices and island fruit. We recommend the passionfruit ceviche or the prawns with grilled mango.
