In search of something a little more authentically Spanish this holiday, we opted for a vibrant and elegant Spanish city, where the locals make up the bulk of the population. Being central was important to us, and we thought it best to pick a spot that both served as a hotspot for the city’s culture and attractions, but also had sophistication and elegance of its own. Silken Reino de Aragon is such a place, located right in the city centre, a perfect base to use as our cultural springboard.

Having rented a car, our drive from Madrid to Zaragoza flew by, and before we knew it, we were at our hotel, parking up in its large underground car park. The hotel was lovely and the staff were so helpful, with our bags being taken to our rooms for us and any requests we had being answered with alacrity.

We learned very quickly just how well located we were, and felt very lucky to have found such a marvellous hotel in such a prime location. A short walk from our hotel found us at the ancient and impressive Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar, a beautiful cathedral which is centuries old. Aside from the majesty of the cathedral, there is a huge square just outside, featuring a modern fountain and café-lined walkway that is very, very pretty at night. It’s a perfect place to sip a glass of wine and take in your surroundings as you watch Zaragoza go by.

Majestic monuments and structures litter the city, and with places like La Seo del Salvador, Palacao de la Aljaferia and Ascensor del Pilar, you’ll never be short of spectacular views of the city, or simply interesting places to visit. A little further out of the city is a gorgeous park named Monasterio de Piedra Park. It is about an hour and a half’s drive away, or two hours by train, but is totally worth it. Going in autumn is one of the most magical times to visit the park, as the trees are a cornucopia of colours, with the temperature being a lot more comfortable than the summer heat. The monastery is equally as impressive as the park, with regular guided tours giving you an interesting insight into its old history. It’s a little gem in greater Zaragoza, and I would highly recommend going later in the year.

The restaurant scene in Zaragoza is buzzing and, like most astounding Spanish cities, food is done very well here. Zaragoza’s cuisine is a curious mix of flavours and concepts – making sure you’re bound to find something for you when there is such a great range to choose from. From award-winning fine dining at El Ciclon in Plaza del Pilar, to the rustic, stripped down Aragonese cooking of El Rincon de Aragon in Calle de Santiago – its culinary branches are far reaching while remaining authentically Spanish. I simply couldn’t fault the food here.

Zaragoza is truly a charming Spanish city, steeped in rich culture, astounding food and a vibrant nature. Less touristy than many better known places in Spain, it offers a little more of a Spanish slice of authenticity than most. Staying somewhere as centrally located as Silken Reino de Aragon truly made the trip, as the wonderful hotel and beautiful city combined to give us a real dose of Spanish culture.

The Silken Reino de Aragón **** hotel is located in Zaragoza, in the North-East of Spain. The very central Plaza de España is only 200 metres away from the hotel, and you can reach the La Seo Cathedral in less than 10 minutes.

BY PLANE

Zaragoza Airport is located only 16km (10mi) from the city itself. However, the airport is served only by limited international flights operated by Ryanair from Paris-Beauvais, Brussels-Charleroi and London-Stansted. If you are flying out of another city it is possible to take a flight to Madrid or Barcelona and make a connection with the AVE trains.

Otherwise, Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (304 km) is located to the north of the capital, around 3 hours drive south west of Zaragoza or 2 hours 45 minutes' train. It receives flights from many capitals and major cities across Europe. Similarly Barcelona–El Prat Airport (302 km) is located south of Barcelona, around 2 hours 50 minutes' drive east of Zaragoza, with a similar length train journey. Both airports receive flights from many capitals and major cities across Europe.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

From Zaragoza Airport:
By Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the taxi ranks outside of the arrival terminals. The trip will take between 15 and 20 minutes and cost between 15€ – 20€.

By Bus: there is a regular bus line that leaves from the airport every 30 minutes during the week, and every hour on Sundays. The journey takes again between 15 and 20 minutes and a single ticket costs 1.85€.

By Car: At the airport you can rent a car from most major car rental companies as well as Spanish companies. From the airport follow signs for Zaragoza and Zaragoza centre. When you arrive to the centre at Plaza de Aragón, take Paseo de la Independencia (the city’s main road), which ends at Plaza de España. On Plaza de España turn right and you will find Calle del Coso. The hotel is located in front of the Teatro Principal.

From Zaragoza-Delicias Railway Station:
By Taxi: the easiest and most hassle free way to arrive to the hotel is to take a taxi outside of the station. The trip will take about 15 minutes and cost between 15€ and 20€.

By Bus: Take the bus Nº34 towards Cementerio and get off at the 10th stop (Av. César Augusto. 27-Mercado Central). On foot head south on Av. César Augusto toward Calle Telesforo Peromarta and turn left onto Calle de la Moreria. Turn left again onto Calle Teniente Cnel. Valenzuela and then turn right onto Calle el Coso. The hotel will be on the right.

TRAIN FROM MADRID & BARCELONA

From Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport:
First you will need to get to Madrid Puerta De Atocha Railway Station. The quickest way from Terminal 4 is to take the C-1 train towards P.Pío - the trip will take about 30 minutes. Once at Atocha, switch to the AVE service in the same station.

From Barcelona–El Prat Airport to the Barcelona Sants Railway Station: From terminal 2-B of the airport, take the R2N in the direction of Sant Celóni. The trip will take around 20 minutes. Get off at the Barcelona Sants stop, and switch to the AVE service.
