My impressions of Lisbon are strongly tied to the colours of this city, imbued with extraordinary light. The pastels and ochre of the magnificent architecture, the blue of the skies and the greens of the Monsanto forest park and gardens. I think it might now be my favourite city in Southern Europe. And just a few miles from the capital, you can find beautiful natural landscapes, which means days spent soaking up the sights and feel of the city and evenings enjoying the serene tranquillity of the gorgeous Portuguese countryside.
Having visited Portugal several times before finally making it to Lisbon, I had already discovered the concept of the Pousada. I have always been fascinated by history, so these luxurious hotels that are housed in ancient mansions with timeless charm captivated me from the very beginning. I naturally looked for one on the outskirts of Lisbon as my own personal haven during my stay.
The Pousada Palacio de Quelux is located less than ten miles from Lisbon and housed in the beautiful guardhouse of Queluz Palace. Constructed in a style mirroring the neighbouring palace, it is an impressive pink structure with ornate baroque and rococo influences. This is a chance to stay in a tranquil and intimate establishment beside a Portuguese historical monument that once was the summer residence of kings. Enjoying all the comforts of modern-day luxury establishments, you seem to be taken back to the more refined world of the Portuguese court.
On entering, I felt myself instantly drawn into the comfortable and elegant interiors. Modern white walls compliment the classic furnishings and antique pieces of art that decorate the spacious rooms. The receptionist greeted me warmly and showed me to one of the hotel’s 26 bedrooms. Here, you are a world away from the crowded city centre.
My bedroom was spacious and bright, decorated in the same white as the rest of the hotel. Dark wood furnishings make for a classic and authentic feel, while green and red textiles give a rich and indulgent feel. I set down my bag on the desk and pulled back the net curtain. I could see the palace and gardens stretching out before me, set against a glorious blue sky that seemed to beckon me outside just in time for the sun to go down.
And so I spent an hour or so exploring the gardens, which are lovely in the light of the Portuguese dusk. Afterwards, already feeling perfectly relaxed and content with my choice of retreat, I made my way to the hotel restaurant. Housed in the former palace kitchens, it is a grand and romantic setting with antique furnishings, stone floor and beamed ceilings. The huge chimney and long stone dining table are very impressive, and give the room real historical charm.
I enjoyed a delicious supper of dishes made with local ingredients and brimming with Portuguese flavours, before retiring to my room for an early night. The glorious lights of Lisbon would be waiting for me in the morning.
