If all of the islands of the Cyclades are steeped in history and myths, Naxos is no exception. Home of Mount Zeus - the highest in the archipelago - this island is said to have sprung from a fight between Poseidon and Dionysus over who would be the island's god. According to popular legend, the god of the grape was victorious, which fits nicely with the island's reputation as a place of charm, abundance and joyfulness. In this cherished setting, owners Ioannis and Maria were raised with a deep appreciation for the traditions of Naxos; warmth, hospitality and the goodness of nature. An idyllic lifestyle that they, in turn, have chosen to share with a lucky few at their Naxian Collection Luxury Villas & Suites.

Hospitality is an elemental ingredient of the culture of Naxos, as much a part of the islands as the wide blue sea or the rugged cliffs. We feel it in the very air of the island as soon as we arrive, radiating from the white walls of the pretty homes dotted along the shores. Yet if Naxos is instinctively homely, that's not to say that it lacks luxury or refinement. One look at the Naxian Collection Villas & Suites perched on the crown of a cedar-strewn hill with a view of the Aegean Sea is enough to reassure us on that point. The traditional Cycladic architecture - white, low, square and airy - is absolutely pristine, and the picture-perfect buildings are accompanied by a series of pools and pretty terraces.

We are welcomed by owners Ioannis and Maria and it's clear that they bring a deep passion for hospitality to their vocation. They ensure we are settled with a cool drink - heavenly in the dying heat of the afternoon - and a welcome basket bursting with fresh fruit, but most of all we appreciate their genuine concern that we have everything we could need or want. There are no plastic smiles or pat lines here, this is an inbuilt talent for guest satisfaction. We are shown to our large suite which, like all of the suites and villas in the collection, makes the most of panoramic views of the turquoise sea. It is beautifully and tastefully decorated in the local style: soft tones, gentle colours with a preference for white, for the most relaxing atmosphere.

The room also comes with a fully-equipped kitchenette but - already accustomed to the exemplary service - we choose to order from the hotel's in-room menu. That's how we find ourselves savouring a delectable meal of the freshest ingredients, from the hotel's own kitchen garden, as we watch the sun sink over the sea. The gourmet delights continue the following day, with a delicious and abundant buffet breakfast, which once again gives pride of place to fresh, organic produce. Revitalised and refuelled, we leave the cocoon of the hotel to explore the rest of the island, although not before ordering a gourmet picnic basket for later in the day.

Our wanderings take us along the island's staggering coastlines, wonderfully preserved and endowed with breath-taking natural landscapes. A gentle stroll brings us to the replicated ruins of the temple of the goddess Demeter alongside a small museum that harbours the original stones and a world of stories. After our detour through antiquity, we head to the beach for the first, though surely not the last, plunge into the soothing waters of the Aegean. Rounding out an idyllic day on this paradise island, we dine in a restaurant in the village of Naxos, before we return to the welcoming arms of our suite at the Naxian Collection Luxury Villas & Suites...

Naxian Collection Luxury Villas & Suites is located one the Greek island of Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades. The hotel is only a few minutes away from Naxos Town, and 700 metres away from a beautiful beach with its crystal clear waters and thick sand.

PLANE

Naxos Island does have its own airport, but depending on the seasons there are only 2 flights per day coming in from Athens (1 in low season) via Olympic Air. Tickets are scarce especially in summer, but if you can manage taking this flight, it would be the most convenient way to arrive. Another option would be flying to Mykonos airport and taking a ferry from there to Naxos.

Flights to Athens International Airport are listed below:
- From the UK: British Airways, Aegean and low cost EasyJet and Ryanair all operate direct flights out of London. Aegean further fly from Birmingham and Manchester, and EasyJet from Manchester and Edinburgh. British Airways also fly indirect from Glasgow and Belfast.

- From Ireland: Direct flights can be found operated by Aer Lingus out of Dublin.

- From Germany: Lufthansa and Aegean fly direct out of Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich. Easyjet also fly direct from Berlin and Hamburg while Germanwings fly from Munich.

- From the Netherlands: KLM provide direct flights from Amsterdam to Athens.

- From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS, Norwegian and Aegean fly direct from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark. Norwegian airlines operate direct flights out of Helsinki, Finland.

- From France: Air France, Aegean and EasyJet all fly direct from Paris. Air France further provide direct flights from Toulouse, Marseille and Nice, while Aegean also fly from Marseille and Lyon.

Flights to Mykonos Island National Airport:
- From the UK: British Airways, EasyJet and Thomson Airways fly seasonal direct flights to Mykonos. EasyJet also fly seasonally from Manchester. Aegean Airlines offer indirect flights from London and Manchester, otherwise more flights are available to Athens.

- From Ireland: No airlines fly direct from cities in Ireland to Mykonos; however, flights are available from Dublin to Athens with Aer Lingus for instance.

- From Germany: Condor fly seasonal direct flights to Mykonos from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich while Germanwings fly seasonally from Cologne. Aegean Airlines offer indirect flights from Berlin and other citie. More flights are available to Athens.

- From the Netherlands: There are no flights that operate between cities in the Netherlands and Mykonos; however, you can find flights to Athens with KLM or Transavia for instance.

- From Sweden, Denmark, Norway & Finland: SAS fly seasonal flights direct to Mykonos from Stockholm. Aegean Airlines offer indirect flights from all four respective capitals Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo & Helsinki. Other airlines offer flights to Athens such as SAS, Norwegian or Finnair.

- From France: Direct, seasonal flights are available from Paris with EasyJet. Aegean also provide indirect flights from Paris and other cities such as Lyon and Marseille. Otherwise you can find flights to Athens with Air France or EasyJet for instance.

- Aegean Airlines offer indirect flights (with a changeover in Athens) from some other cities across Europe. It is also possible to fly first to Athens and then either take an Aegean flight or a boat the rest of the way to Mykonos.

TAKING THE FERRY FROM MYKONOS

- Transfer from the airport to the ferry terminal:
The terminal is only a 10 minute drive away. You have the choice between Mykonos KTEL buses (public transport) or taking a taxi for which you shouldn’t be paying more than 10€ (£7) for the ride.

- Taking the ferry:
There are plenty of voyages during the day especially in the summer. The trip takes between 1 hour and 3 hours depending on the routes, and cost between 20€ and 40€ (£14 - £28). Tickets can be booked directly on company websites: Greek Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, Blue Star Ferries, Nel Lines, G.A. Ferries.

HOW TO GET TO THE HOTEL

- From Naxos Island National Airport:
The hotel offers free private transfer to and from the airport for VeryChic guests.

- From the ferry terminal:
The hotel is only a 15 minute drive away from the ferry terminal, and the most convenient way to arrive is by taxi (less than 20€ / £14).
