Neya Lisboa Hotel ★★★★

Mainland Europe’s westernmost capital is also one of its most alive. We have a few days to explore the home of the explorers, and we throw ourselves into its winding, cobbled alleyways with glee, each twist and turn revealing another historic gem, lively square or hilltop viewpoint over a sprawl of terracotta roofs. From the clatter of the old trams to the noisy buzz of every café, everything is loud, atmospheric and effervescent, and the hilly city soon has us feeling worn down and ready for a spot of peace and quiet.

Fortunately, we are staying at the Neya Lisboa Hotel, a perfect spot for a little rest and recuperation. It is not right in the chaotic centre of things, but still extremely well located – a twenty to thirty minute walk gets us to several of the top sights, while the metro is also conveniently located to whisk us off wherever we want. Alternatively, the hotel’s free-to-use bikes provide an easy, quick and environmentally friendly way to get around.

The hotel has everything we need to help us recover from our daily exertions in the city centre. The bedrooms offer some outstanding facilities, helping us get as comfortable as possible and complementing the sleek contemporary décor. Each room seems to invite you into the cosy bed, where you can soothe yourself with the complimentary Shiatsu massage pillow. Peaceful as the rooms are, the spa is the height of relaxation, spoiling us with a fantastic range of facilities and treatments.

On our first afternoon, we already take the opportunity to enjoy our complimentary massage courtesy of VeryChic, and we make sure to come back several times!

The day begins with a lavish breakfast spread, including fair trade produce, fresh fruit, delectable pastries and some irresistible Pastéis de Belem (the speciality local custard tarts). Later on, the chic bar provides a relaxed setting for a pre-dinner aperitif, before moving on for dinner at the Viva Lisboa restaurant. The Mediterranean based dishes are fresh and flavoursome, with a few innovative touches or elements of fusion cuisine. We devour every plate of exquisite cooking placed before us, safe in the knowledge that after a workout in the gym, a bike ride into town and a trek up and down some of Lisbon’s beautiful hills, we will be ready to do it all again by the following evening!
