Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa ★★★★★

Just because Malta is small does not mean it is not mighty and this became immediately clear to me when I arrived at the Corinthia Palace Hotel. What a mighty façade it was that stood before me; a pillared entrance led up to double doors surrounded by a decorative water fountains, manicured bushes and grass; a veritable palace. Its exterior was complemented by the staff; from the very moment I walked in, I noted that the hotel staff were active and smiling.

A smooth and quick check in service got me straight to my room so could settle in. My deluxe double room was lavishly decorated in regal reds and royal golds with a soft beige carpet. The walls were neutral and created a light air of spaciousness in a room that was already fairly large at 30m². As a nice little bonus there was a balcony that overlooked the palace’s beautiful gardens, the light from which delightfully filled the room. There was also a table and armchair found in the space along with all the five-star amenities one would expect from such a hotel; LCD TV with local and international channels, complimentary wifi, toiletries, 24-hour room service and tea and coffee making facilities.

I took a moment to freshen up but not enough a moment to even unpack my bags because I was keen to get exploring the hotel, or should I say palace… First stop the spa. Really, I should have made it my last stop, that way I could have stayed! The atmosphere was irresistibly relaxing, enticing me remain right there. The Athaneum Spa offers outdoor pool, hydrotherapy indoor pool, jacuzzi, and restful steam garden. There is also a fitness centre and possibility of hiring a personal trainer to get that summer-ready body! Alas, I could not remain here forever so I moved on in search of more palatial treasures.

My exploration led to the four different dining areas of the hotel. The Summer Kitchen was the perfect opportunity to make the most of the hotel’s Mediterranean gardens and Malta’s warm weather. There’s a varied range of foods, whether you’re looking for a healthy three course meal, a light lunch or even just a delicious dessert you won’t be disappointed. Another laid back atmosphere in which to dine is at the Rickshaw restaurant which serves a varied selection of Asian-fusion dishes. Rickshaw is one of the most popular Oriental restaurants in Malta, so don’t miss out!

Then there was the pleasant Orange Grove Brasserie, found in the hotel’s lobby. It serves light snacks and drinks and offers a delightful afternoon tea. This quintessentially British tradition of afternoon tea in continued in the hotel’s Villa Corinthia restaurant, their most stylish dining area. I was told of the dress code as I walked by and had to begin planning my outfit, it was already decided; this was where I was going to dine on my first night. I’ve always been a fan of dressing to the nines, so a smart dress code did not deter me, especially when the delicious cuisine that was waiting to be tasted was all locally sourced. My mouth was watering just from reading the delectable menu. I also spotted that every Sunday they hold an exquisite Afternoon Tea with a large selection of sweet confectionaries, and I was already anticipating the next Sunday, which luckily for me was tomorrow; I wouldn’t have to wait long!

I finished my explorations in the Caprice Lounge Bar, a sleek, decadent and antique ambience. The outside was a welcome contrast, with more modern fittings on the patio. The bar caters for every taste, whether you like smoky red wines or dry white, sweet liquors or malt whisky, a light beer or vibrant cocktails. This was where I finished my explorations, but where I began my evening… it began with a light aperitif and let onto a sumptuous three course meal. Tomorrow would lead me to the mysteries and wonders of this intriguing group of islands, and when I was too tired for more I would return and dive into the relaxing pool.
