Imagine a picturesque river running through a quaint town, close to the historic city of Porto, and you’ve got Amarante - popular with tourists as well as residents of Porto. Here, you will find the Casa da Calçada a charming and luxurious hotel looking over the Tâmega River. A former 18th palace decorated to the nines, it also boasts multi-awardwinning cuisine fit for a king. Luxury and elegance greets you at every turn in this magnificent abode - so what are you waiting for?
ON THE MENU...
Introducing Chef Tiago Bonito's 4-course Menu (subject to change):

(persil, olive noire, poivrons, pois chiches, oignons, pain de maïs)
~
Mérou et calamar géant
(riz aux tomates fraîches et chorizo)
~
Filet de porc noir avec oeufs de truites
(sauce au vin rouge, maïs, abricot, graines de sésame, écrevisses)
~
Safran et vanille

On entering the lobby of the Casa da Calçada you will be awestruck by its magnificent Baroque and neo-classical style. The building itself dates back to the 16th century and has been given special value in terms of architecture and cultural standing by the Portuguese government. Once used as a palace by the Earl of Redondo, you will be forgiven for feeling like a king in this impressive environment. Shown to your room by the friendly staff, you will fall in love with the classic and elegant interior, fit for royalty. Take advantage of the luxurious marble bathroom and the dark mahogany colours that adorn the glorious rooms and suites.
The hotel’s Michelin-starred Largo do Paço Restaurant is the perfect place for your first evening. The soft velvets of the bold pinks, purples and greens of the restaurant creates a relaxing and roegal ambience. The menu features regional and Mediterranean cuisine such as foie gras for starters, imperador (seafood and cannelloni) with cheese, and quince jelly to top it off.
Amarante is great for cycling and the 9km of roads are specifically designed for the use of cyclists. This stretch of track called the Ecopista da Linha do Tâmega runs alongside the rails of the old railway and lies just a 15-minute walk from your hotel.
In the afternoon, take a stroll through the historic UNESCO World Heritage protected Ribeira district of Porto, gazing at the marvellous mix of gothic, Romanesque, baroque and neo-classical architecture. Make a stop at the magnificent cathedral and then go for a bite to eat at one of the many local cafes nearby. Back in Amarante, you can discover more about the town’s history by browsing the Dominican Convent of São Gonçalo de Amarante and the Museum Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, featuring information about local artists and writers.
After all the excitement of the day, perhaps you should think about giving those muscles a treat back at the Casa da Calçada in the state-of-the-art spa and wellness centre. Later you can catch a dance or music show at the Teatro Nacional São João, which features an interior courtyard surrounded by huge walls.
You’ll get so used to your luxurious surroundings and top-notch service at the Casa da Calçada, that it will be hard to return home.
