Melville Castle ★★★★

Scotland has more than its fair share of beautiful historic castles, scattered around remote corners of the country against the backdrop of the moody Scottish countryside, like scenes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Melville Castle is not so remote however, within easy reach of the capital city of Edinburgh, yet it is perfectly secluded and serene. Around twenty minutes away from the city centre, this spectacular 18th century castle provides the best of both worlds, surrounded by 50 acres of rugged woodland and peaceful gardens.

The original medieval castle, used as a hunting lodge by Mary Queen of Scots, was torn down in 1786 and replaced with the gorgeous, turreted mansion which still stands today. This new building has also attracted plenty of notable and prestigious guests, including Queen Victoria, so you are in good company when you check in at Melville Castle! As soon as you step inside, it is easy to see why famous monarchs and members of high society have been enamoured with the castle for hundreds of years. Though the castle fell into disrepair in the 1980s, it has since been lovingly and expertly restored, providing all the splendour and grandeur you would expect when you first lay eyes upon the majestic exterior.

The period décor takes you back in time, with old portraits, hunting trophies and gleaming mirrors adorning the walls, ornate chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings, plenty of antique furnishings and plush carpets under foot. There are also elegant sweeping staircases, old-fashioned fireplaces and tall windows affording stunning views over the grounds. In the bedrooms, this traditional, sophisticated style meets with the very best of 21st century comfort and luxury. Each room comes equipped with crisp linen sheets, satellite televisions, minibars and en suite bathrooms complete with power showers, soft fluffy towels and high-quality complimentary toiletries.

When it comes to eating and drinking, Melville Castle keeps up the same high standards, serving up delicious meals fit for the kings and queens who used to visit. The day begins with a traditional Scottish breakfast, including local delicacies such as tattie scones, haggis and other locally-sourced produce, while a plentiful continental buffet is also available. By the time that has all gone down, it will probably be time for afternoon tea, a traditional selection of finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones and pastries, with the option to wash it all down with a glass of bubbly. As for lunch and dinner, exquisite dishes made from local ingredients are prepared with real artistry and expertise, bursting with flavour and immaculately presented, and all served up in the atmospheric cellar. Meanwhile, a second restaurant is also soon to open!

When it comes to filling your days, it is certainly feasible to travel into Edinburgh every day and see the sights in the capital city. However, the air of peace and tranquillity which pervades every nook and cranny of the castle invites you to simply rest and relax in the beautiful countryside before heading off for a weekend in the city. Beyond the bounds of the hotel’s own grounds, there are picturesque golf courses, country estates and breath-taking landscapes waiting to be explored, which all makes for a blissful rural retreat just outside the city.
