I have been called a hippy once or twice in my time, so I'm all in favour of what I’ve seen happening in recent years, the mainstreaming of once 'hippy' things. It means I can ask for organic without getting funny looks, or talk about the benefits of my weekly meditation sessions without people automatically labeling me as weird. It also means that places like Le Chateau de Sable **** in beautiful Brest are becoming more common; hotels with a light footprint, but who don't scrimp on luxury.

  • The National Navy Museum is set in an old castle overlooking the harbour with amazing views. The exhibitions, which cut a balance between local and naval history, may seem a bit of a niche interest, but it is well curated and worth the visit for the environs.
