The Corner Townhouse

When in Rome do as the Romans do: lavish and luxurious!

By Melanie Webb, VeryChic correspondent
“Do you want to see the sunset?” he enquired sheepishly. I nodded in agreement, yet I was still half in doubt; it wasn’t a particularly clear sky today neither very warm. Perceiving my confusion he went on; “then you can compare this one with the sunset over Rome, as that’s where we’re going this weekend…” Suddenly visions of the Vatican, the Roman Colloseum, Trevi Fountain, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps lit up in my mind and the taste and smell of pizza and pasta began to magically materialise…

  • NO.AU is ‘knowhow’ in phonetic transcription, and that they do. They certainly know how to charm visitors with their artsy bohemian space, hidden in the back alleys of the Centro Storico. Stop in for an Italian craft beer and one of their small snacks, like hand-cut chips. They also offer more substantial plates, all sourced from small local organic producers. Piazza di Montevecchio 16a, 00186 Rome
  • Italian Ice-cream! At La Gelateria Frigidarium, the delicious variety of flavours is well worth the wait! Cool off with their ice-cream after a busy day of sight-seeing… Via del Governo Vecchio, 112, 00186 Rome
  • San Clemente is a little publicised gem, a medieval and early-Renaissance church with frescoes by Masolino. In the basement, you can view the remains of a second-century apartment block and a shrine to Mithras. Via Labicana, 95, 00184 Rome
  • Climb the Aventino Hill; enjoy the views and the beautiful gardens. Don’t miss taking a peek through the keyhole; after taking in the view at Parco Savello return to the road and turn right past Santa Sabina and walk almost as far as you can go in a straight line. The keyhole gate is one of several on the right side as you come to the end of the road. The most popular thing on the Aventino hill itself is to take a peek through the keyhole where you can see St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City perfectly framed between two rows of trees. Parco Savello Giardino degli Aranci, Via di Santa Sabina, 00153 Rome
  • Leave behind the noise of the city for a while in the fabulous fragrant Rose Garden at the foot of the Aventino Hill. Via di Valle Murcia, 6, 00153 Rome
