The more I explore Marrakech, the more I fall under its spell. Just when it seems I have begun to get to grips with it and seen it all, another layer of the onion peels away to reveal a whole new fascinating universe full of marvels and delights. I am also ever more grateful to VeryChic for yet another wonderful retreat, both in the heart of the action but safe in a haven of peace and well-being. I can therefore be sure to make the most of my trip, emerging each day into the colourful fray renewed and refreshed. This time it is the Riad Alegria, situated by Bahia Palace, close to Jamaa El Fnaa and many key sights, and I am headed there now, keen to see what new sumptuous surprises lay in store. For my Spanish partner it already bodes well, as ‘Alegria’ in his language, means Joy...
We arrive in the afternoon and gratefully duck into the cool interior where we are greeted with friendly smiles and a peaceful, traditional inner courtyard with water fountain, surrounded by orange trees. The décor is a tasteful blend of classic Moroccan style and modern chic which maintains a light, elegant air throughout. The shades of red and white along with earthy tones, feel both fresh and cosy. Our bedroom is exactly this. Bright, spacious and sumptuous with its vast bed and bathroom with walk-in shower and his'n'hers sinks. We have a pretty seating area and large flat screen television as well as air conditioning and free Wi-Fi, reminding us that this is indeed a luxury hotel with the highest standards of facilities. Eager to explore what more we have at our disposal, we leave our bags and take a tour of the riad.
We discover a gorgeous Hammam, where we instantly book full treatments for tomorrow following the day's adventures around Marrakech. We also find a pretty living room with fireplace and a beautiful terrace with an inviting outdoor pool in black tile, bordered by potted plants and cacti. Unable to resist the invitation, we quickly change and plunge into the sweet, refreshing water before drying off in the golden sun and lounging in the shade of the gazebo. Lazily, we watch the sky turn from blue to violet to pink and, unable to drag ourselves out of our state of sheer relaxation, we barely make it back to our room to change for dinner. Grateful to have booked ahead to eat right here in the hotel, we discover a delicious menu that varies from day to day depending on the market's freshest produce. Supper is a resounding success. As everything here, it is marked by a certain relaxed joie-de-vivre that is certainly apt given the name of the Riad Alegria, which, for all its contemporary sophistication, wraps you in a warm feeling of being right at home!
