Berlin seems to be made up of one part urban grit and one part glamour. Its all-nighter party scene means it never really sleeps, whilst its contributions to the contemporary art world make it one of the world’s hottest cultural trendsetters. But it is not just parties and art that Berlin offers its guests; its turbulent history has given it a raw edge and countless stories that still pervade in the present day. This mix of historic wonder and trendy vibe makes it one of the most unique cities in the world, with plenty of great things to do and discover.
From the Brandenburg Gate to Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery, there is something to be explored on every stretch of road. And, in the middle of it all, there is Berlin Mitte, the pulsating heart of the city. Here, there is an abundance of design-led cafes, independent art galleries, high-end media agencies, an ever-present fashion scene, and more bars and restaurants that you can point a stick at.
This is where I find the Lux 11, slap bang in the centre of it all. In one of the most vibrant areas of the city, the Lux 11 acts as a study in mixing old with new. The building was originally a residential block built back in the late 19th century, before it became office space for the KGB during the reign of the communists. Today, it has been primped and preened to perfection to align with modern-day Berlin’s trendy backdrop and innovative appeal. Rubbing shoulders with quirky boutiques, the Lux 11 is just moments from some of the city’s best-loved attractions, including the iconic TV tower. It rises up in a sparkling display of white architecture, and oozes urban charm and individuality.
After an attentive and friendly welcome, I was led up to my Deluxe suite which certainly lived up to its name. I was greeted by an elegant and stylist apartment with high ceilings and a modern, muted colour palette with bursts of bright purples. The luxurious open bathroom featured a top-of-the-range rain shower, whilst the large windows offered a bright ambiance and views out across the hustle and bustle of Berlin Mitte.
In the mornings, I ate breakfast next door in the Prince Restaurant. By day, it offers fuel for boutique agency workers and by night it comes alive in true Berlin style, with colourful cocktails and a lively atmosphere. A day of delving into the backstory of Berlin and its modern-day narratives was often followed by a trip to the Beauty Spa at Lux 11’s sister property, where I used my 20% discount for relaxing facial treatments. Guests also have free access to the Holmes Gendarmenmarkt, a health and fitness club located about half an hour from Lux 11.
Berlin may well be made up of one part urban grit and one part glamour, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a city that bursts with a fascinating history, endless contemporary culture, and a laidback lifestyle that makes anyone and everyone feel at home. In the heart of it all, at the Lux 11 in Berlin Mitte, I found the perfect place to start exploring everything this wonderful city has to offer.
