The Cotswolds are set in a fairytale landscape of cobblestone villages, colourful fields, and winding English countryside. Home to a hearty dose of traditional English culture, the Wheatsheaf Inn offers the perfect place from which to enjoy the region. With its old-world bar, luxurious lounge rooms, and plush bedrooms, it is the epitome of old meets new.

Despite living in England for almost my entire life, I hadn’t ventured to the Cotswolds before my trip to the Wheatsheaf Inn. In my mind, I pictured a fairytale landscape of quaint English cottages, lush, flower-dotted fields, and winding villages where horse and carts wouldn’t look out of place. Maybe I hadn’t been because I wanted to keep this image etched in my mind, like a make-believe setting that was almost too good to be true.

Thankfully, the Wheatsheaf Inn and the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds finally drew me in, and I am so glad they did. The region was everything I expected and more; thatched-roofs edged narrow lanes, small birds flitted across carpeted hills, and stone pubs stood on pretty much every corner. There is something so refreshing about breathing in clean country air after a lifetime spent living in the bustle of a city. Yes, I had the Cotswolds idealised in my head, but they lived up to that, especially when I arrived at the Wheatsheaf Inn.

I was greeted in true, English countryside style, with a cosy, warm atmosphere. Forming the central hub of the village, the Inn was filled with quirky characters and local faces propping up the bar. But in its stylish break away from dimly-lit backstreet British pubs, the Wheatsheaf also displayed elegant private dining rooms, lounge areas characterised by rich, leather sofas and dark-wood furniture, and a rustic treatment area.

Led through the bar, past the games area, families enjoying afternoon coffee, and the early 20th-Century portraits of the Wills tobacco family, I was shown to my room – one of only fourteen at the Inn. If I thought the bar and dining area were pretty shows of English charm, then my room went above and beyond. Thick carpets met colourful walls, contemporary art, and plush curtains, whilst the bathroom showcased an old-fashioned copper bath given a sophisticated modern-day makeover. The English past came crashing together with a luxury finish, with low-ceilings and sloped eaves watching over power showers and top-of-the-range televisions.

When I woke in the morning, I half expected to hear a horse whinnying outside, ready to take me off to another cobbled English village. Instead, Chef Anthony Ely cooked up a dream of a breakfast in true British style – the best way to start any day in the Cotswolds, particularly if, like me, you want to get stuck into all the great activities on offer in the vicinity.

Getting back to my English roots, I tried clay target shooting and fishing, before exploring some of the castles, manors, and historic houses that dapple the Cotswolds. Wandering through the manicured gardens and marvelling at the intricate stonework on the turrets, it felt like I’d stepped straight into the fairytale version of the Cotswolds that I’d pictured before my trip.

It is safe to say the Cotswolds blew me away with their beauty. With contemporary England hurtling fast-paced into the future, it was nice to be reminded of a simpler and an easier way of life. The Wheatsheaf Inn was the perfect crux to explore the age-old traditions of the English countryside without having to give up any of my modern-day luxuries.

The Wheatsheaf Inn is situated in the ever-charming Cotswolds, in the small Gloucestershire market town of Northleach, within easy reach of both Cheltenham and Cirencester.

BY TRAIN

The closest train stations to the hotel are Kemble Station, Kingham Station and Cheltenham Spa Station. Train times, routes and tickets can be found online with National Rail. All three station are around a 20-30 minute taxi ride from the inn.

International trains arrive first to London’s St. Pancras International Station and can be found and booked via Rail Europe (together, the companies Eurostar, TGV and Thalys operate high-speed train services from France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands etc.). Once in London, take the underground to London Paddington Station. From there you may take a train to either Kemble or Kingham stations. Both are around a 15 minute taxi ride from the inn.

BY CAR

Northleach is situated just off the A40 between Cheltenham and Burford. Northleach is a town located just off the main road north 'the Fosseway' between Cirencester and Stow on the Wold. By car it is 2 hours from London.

Arriving from the South East: take the Mall to Duke of Wellington PI. Follow A40, M40 and A40 to the hill/A361 in Burford. Follow the A424 to Fosse Way/Roman Rd/A429 in Gloucestershire and follow Fosse Way/Roman Rd/A429 to Tewkesbury. Follow the B4077 to the hotel.

Arriving from the South West (Wales): head southwest and continue on Llandovery. Take the A40 and M50 to B4077 in Gloucestershire and follow the B4077 to the hotel.

Arriving from the North (Manchester): Take great bridgewater St.A6143 and regent Rd/A57 to M60 in Salford. Take the M6 and M5 to A46 in Tewkesbury. Take exit 5 from M5. Follow the A46 and B4077 to the hotel.

There are several small, little served airports near the inn however, the closest well served airports are Birmingham International, followed by Bristol Airport – about 60 miles (95 km) and 70 miles (110 km) away, respectively.
You may also fly to London Heathrow, which is closer to the hotel by car, but harder to reach by train.
