Grand Hôtel du Domaine de Divonne ★★★★

I find myself at the foot of the Jura Mountains, at the gateway to the beautiful natural park of Haut-Jura. It is here that I check in to the Domaine de Divonne, an elegant, Art Deco-inspired building amidst the exquisite surrounding scenery. The first thing I notice are the impressive floor-to-ceiling columns in the spacious lounge area, and the warm and welcoming colour palette featuring shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. The rooms boast an equal amount of attention to detail, with plush, comfortable bedding, dark, cosy furniture, and tall windows that are bathed in sunlight.

Elsewhere in the hotel, I wander through the in-house casino, full of colourful roulette tables and flashing fruit machines, and enjoyed watching the action unfold. I wasn’t here to test my chances with Lady Luck, however; instead, my visit was for the expansive spa and wellness facilities which the area is renowned for. I’d come to this glorious town in the French mountains for a little rest and relaxation, and a considerable degree of pampering, and I was not disappointed. The treatment menu is packed full of soothing, stress-relieving treatments, and the massages are simply divine. Once I was buffed to perfection, I slunk into the dimly-lit, atmospheric Jacuzzi to unwind in peace. There’s also an outdoor pool, perfect for cooling off in the French summer sun.

Despite its quiet location in the French mountains, there is never a dull moment at the Domaine de Divonne. Here you will find a theatre, often offering theatrical performances or one man shows (please consult the hotel for information on dates). Poker tournaments are organised within the casino, in which you will also find a brasserie with a buffet.
