Ahhh! The Belle Epoque. A time characterized by optimism, peace, new technology and scientific discoveries. A time when literature, music, theatre, and visual arts flourished throughout the world. A time that, in retrospect, we consider to be the ‘Golden Age’, the ‘Age of Beauty’ or the ‘Gilded Age’. Luckily for VeryChic guests, there is no better way to relive the Belle Epoque than by staying in the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, a splendid 4-star hotel in San-Sebastian-Donostia, perfectly situated to overlook the Bay of La Concha, in the Spanish Basque country.
Built in 1865 for Queen Isabelle II of Spain, the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra is the epitome of Belle Epoque architecture. Its imposing white façade with elegant mouldings and wrought iron features once towered over the Bay of La Concha, a beacon for incoming sailors. Today, the modern buildings that flank the hotel on both sides may have caught up in terms of size, but none of them match the stately elegance of this regal abode that has welcomed Kings and Queens throughout the ages.
If you are looking for a typically Spanish place to stay in, you may be disappointed. As the name suggests, the Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra, is decked out in pure Victorian splendour. The British influence is felt throughout, from the architecture to the fabulous G&Ts in the Swing Bar. Here, you won’t find any state-of-the-art, metallic chairs but rather, plush, velvety sofas and old-fashioned armchairs, period chandeliers and light fittings, classic sculptures, framed artwork and marble floors. Sit for hours in one of the four fabulous lounges – the Bristol, the Windsor, the Wellington or, the Victoria – imagining what it must have been like in the good old days when smartly-dressed gentlemen kissed the hands of dignified ladies before whisking them around the dance floor.
Better yet, spend the day staring out at the sea from one of the 167 beautifully decorated bedrooms with their flowery fabrics. The hotel may be old-fashioned, but thanks to recent refurbishments, it provides all the modern-day comforts one comes to expect from a classy 4-star establishment; Wi-Fi, satellite television, air-conditioning, and modern plumbing and friendly staff all contribute to make your stay a success.

- Bar-hopping by discreetly following a local around or in some of these renowned bars: La Viña (3 calle 31 de Agosto), Bernardo Etxea (7 calle del Puerto), Goiz Argi (4 calle Fermin Calbeton), Bodega Donostiarra (13 calle de Peña y Goni), and Txepetxa (5 calle de Pescaderia). For pronunciation, ask one of the locals!
- At low tide, the Isla Santa Clara in the middle of the bay occasionally reveals a slip of untouched sand that has come to be known as the Phantom Beach. For a closer look, take the 10-minute boat ride offered by Motoras de la Isla.
+34 (0)943 000 450 - Take the funicular up to the top of Mount Igueldo on the western edge of the bay for one of the (self-proclaimed, but rightfully so) ‘best views in the world’ overlooking the city and the surrounding seascape. The ride, which lasts 20 minutes, leaves from the old part of town.
