Hotel della Conciliazione ★★★★

Enough is enough, not seeing one’s sister for half a year is completely unacceptable so it was time to get together and take her on a girly holiday to see one of the world’s greatest cities; Rome. Rome has always fascinated me, its centre that is absolutely covered with divinely beautiful landmarks. Fittingly, it is the perfect city to roam about in because around every corner is another astonishing miracle of art. This time we set out to stay by the Vatican to investigate the great history that surrounds it, and who knows perhaps we would even meet the Pope himself…

Sitting just a few minutes from the mighty and regal Vatican is the cosy and welcoming Della Conciliazione. This newly refurbished hotel was the perfect choice for our little Roman trip, the base that would enable us to live as the Romans do. It has a typical Mediterranean, Roman façade, though it is relatively simple and unrevealing. Inside reveals the true beauty and welcome of the place. The glossy reception with friendly and smiley staff greeted us and before we knew it we were making our way to our hotel room. This is where we witnessed the modern Rome with its fashionable bedding and splashes of vibrant colour in a simple room. We had a little bathroom including a bath and bide.

Waiting for us was a bubbling bottle of Prosecco, the perfect way to celebrate our arrival! We decided to chat over a glass of Prosecco each and indulge in a girly sleepover. Room service and chick flick on our flat-screen was on the menu! Though the simple yet chic bar and our 20% off was very tempting. We spent our first evening catching up on so much lost time. The night flew by, we were amazed about how much a good nights’ sleep can do, and we woke up softly to daylight floating through the windows. 

Downstairs was a little salon where breakfast was served every morning with delectable local products; jams, honeys and all sorts of Italian goodness that filled our stomach up in the mornings. It was also a great feeling to know that as soon as we walked outside the door and turned the corner of the avenue the Vatican would be there.  We could be the first to get to visit the Basilica to roam around that fantastical country. But also, right beside us was the metro to all the sights of central Rome, the Spanish steps and the Trevi Fountain to the beautiful Mediterranean plazas. The gods have truly blessed this mighty city!

What a delightful way to catch up with a sister! We decided to seek out the less known sights of Rome such as the Galleria Colonna and made our way to the Aventino Hill to gaze at St. Peter’s Basilica through the keyhole in the gate. Now that climb was an achievement, but the gardens and view were worth it!

In the end, between the munching on gelato, on crunchy pizza, succulent lasagne and sipping Prosecco I think we managed to get some catching up done!
