Terhills Hotel ★★★★

Belgium is not only famous for its exquisite chocolate and beer, but also its fine cuisine, rich cultural heritage, majestic architecture and vanguard spirit. Home to both the official capital of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO, it has an international flair and sophistication all its own. It is no surprise to me, therefore, that it should be the birthplace of the marvellous, multi-lingual Audrey Hepburn. That poised, playful elegance and worldly stylishness is somehow permanently in the air here.

The Terhills Hotel prides itself on its star-quality boutique treatment, and warm, personal approach to stylish living. Just what I need to regain a little sense of glamour in my life whilst I switch off from the daily grind. This is a trip I am making by myself. Some me time. Well...I am bringing Audrey with me in spirit with a collection of my all-time favourite Hepburn films to watch, cocktail in hand, from the comfort of my sleek double bed. This is, of course, between bouts of shopping in the Maasmechelen Outlet Village next door! My room itself is beautifully designed, spacious and chic, combining chocolate and caramel tones with smooth lines and sumptuous details such as the abundant cushions on my bed and the Nespresso machine. A soft blanket here, an attractive ornament there, warm lighting and fluffy dressing gowns and towels, create a cosy cosseting ambiance and I already feel at home.

Having unpacked my half-empty suitcase (I had to leave room for my shopping spree!) I wander down to explore the magnificent French garden, pausing along the way to accept my welcome glass of Prosecco, before meandering the pretty paths between immaculate lawns and pruned hedges – quite different from the wild, verdant forests, lakes and parkland just beyond. It is nevertheless a peaceful, picturesque setting that echoes with the historical origins of this renovated old building that was once the headquarters for the Eisden mine. I find it hard to picture its industrial past however, as coal-blacked faces have given way to shining expressions of relaxed enjoyment and a twinkle in everyone's eye that seems to say, “Aren't we lucky?”. Yes, I do feel pretty lucky as I almost lick my plate clean at the gourmet restaurant and pad up to my room like a contented cat to watch Breakfast At Tiffany's.
