Le Palais des Remparts

Authentic Moroccan experience with outstanding views.

By Edward Fairbairn, VeryChic correspondent
Hidden in a cave, somewhere deep in the North African desert, a young street urchin named Aladdin stumbles across a magic lamp, and tentatively rubs it. “You have summoned me from a sleep of a thousand years!” exclaims the genie as he bursts from the lamp. “Tell me, what three things you desire the most – your wish is my command!” The boy can scarcely believe his luck – a chance to change his life forever! “Let me think… I want to stay in a palace, luxurious like those of the great sultans. And… and I want to see the sea – I want my palace to tower above everything else, so I can see miles of blue all around me.  And finally, I want to be able to live this life of luxury for an affordable price!” Fortunately for the boy, the genie went by the name of VeryChic and knew just the place. And so it was that Aladdin was whisked off to Le Palais des Remparts in Essaouira…

Essaouira

Morocco

The Palais des Remparts overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Medina of the Moroccan coastal city of Essaouira. The hotel lies just behind the city’s magnificent historical ramparts and is close to Skala (an old Portuguese fort).

BY PLANE

  • Though the closest airport is Essaouira-Mogador Airport, only flights from Paris with Royal Air Maroc or Transavia and seasonal flights from Marseille with Ryanair are available. The closest well served international airport is Marrakech Menara Airport (around 2.5-3 hours away).

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

  • - Hotel transfer: The hotel offers transfer services or request, to/from Marrakech, Agadir and Casablanca Airports (starting at 70€ (around £50) each way).

    - By taxi: Grande Taxis will take you to Essaouira from Marrakech airport during the daytime only. The trip takes about 3 hours and could cost anywhere between 450dh and 1000dh, depending on your bargaining skills and other factors such as the season or simply the mood of the driver (haggling is an art in Morocco and taxi drivers often go about it fairly aggressively).

    - By bus: Alternatively, take a taxi to the Supratours bus station, located right around the corner from the train station (‘gare de trains’) in Marakech city centre. Supratours (run by ONCF) offer cheap bus travel to Essaouira for 70dh per person, plus around 5dh extra per bag. There are four buses a day and it takes around 3 hours to get to the centre of Essaouira, right in between the Bab Sbaa and Bab Marrakech entrance to the Medina. It is not too hard to find the hotel as it is well sign posted, near the rampart. You may get there by foot, as it is fairly easy to walk around Essaouira, otherwise take a ‘petit-taxi’.
  • Special Condition: 2 night minimum stay
