Surrounded by nature, the sea, and lush forests, Anglet in France’s Basque Country is the perfect haven for those on the hunt for a relaxing break. Offering a little something for everyone, Anglet dishes out glorious ocean views with white sand beaches where water sports are all the rage, and fairytale scenes of the Chiberta forest where hikers are exposed to vibrant green canopies and a whimsical selection of wildlife. These things combined give Anglet is own distinct smell, where fresh sea scents mingle with heady forest pine and wild flowers.
All along the coast bars and restaurants pop up offering tastes of Anglet, from high-end drinking holes to traditional, family-run eateries. It is this authentic side of the region that drew me in, promising flavours from France’s past and its laidback look at the present day. It is tucked in between these traditional displays of French flair that I check into the Résidence Prestige Odalys Les Villas d'Anadara, a luxury villa set within a contemporary complex. Surrounded by whitewashed, modern buildings and bursts of greenery, the villa pays homage to the serene ambiance of Anglet whilst offering guests a splash of luxurious French charm.
Inside, the five-room villa is exquisitely decorated, with a muted colour palette of whites, beiges, and monochrome, eclectic touches like eye-catching lampshades and polished wood furniture, and a bright and airy design. In the kitchen and dining area there is a sleek breakfast bar and all the amenities you could ask for and, through the French doors, I am greeted by a private garden complete with peaceful swimming pool. Whether travelling with family or friends, this is the perfect place to unwind and soak up the leisurely pace of life in this part of France. On the complex there is a welcome lobby and a whole host of attentive staff who are happy to cater to every whim, from restaurant recommendations to tips and tricks for exploring the local area.
And what a local area it is! Just 300m from the villa there is Cinq Cantons beach. Head a little further, and you’ll find stunning white sand beaches that epitomise the word paradise. Close by is Chiberta, a popular part of Anglet that is a bustling hub of shops, restaurants, and bars, and Biarritz is around 5km away, offering a glimpse into the finer side of France’s coast.
Though Anglet promises a lazy way of life, it also caters to the more adventurous traveller. With its great selection of activities, from hiking and biking to water sports and golf, there is something to keep everyone busy. And if it all gets too much? Head to one of the many spas that dot the area for some TLC and a bit of much-needed ‘me-time’.
Anglet isn’t the best-known place in France, but it certainly might be the most relaxing. The combination of fresh seaside smells, incredible countryside views, and the passionate homage to traditional French life, make it the perfect place for a tranquil break. The Résidence Prestige Odalys Les Villas d'Anadara embodies all of this and more, with a contemporary design and luxury amenities.
