Villa Mon Repos ★★★★★

“The hinge through the centuries between the great Western culture and the temptations of the desert and the sun, between reason and magic, the climate of feeling and the heatwaves of passion.” Bufalino’s description of Sicily and Taormina is surprisingly accurate. Sporting a silhouette painted with ancient ruins, soaring mountains, and a smattering of pretty houses snaking up the hillside, Taormina really is magical. And Bufalino certainly wasn’t the first to think this. In fact, Taormina has been the subject of many literary pieces over the centuries, inspiring artists and writers from a range of eras and backgrounds.

As one of the oldest civilisations in Sicily, Taormina is imbued with a historic charm borne from its rich past. Nearby, its Greek ruins hark back to 753 BC, whilst its streets are the perfect homage to times-gone-by, with rustic architecture and traditional touches. Against it all, Mount Etna carves an impressive backdrop that has watched over the town for thousands of years. There is the Ancient Theatre, too, which hosts cultural events throughout the year, the panoramic terrace which houses the Baroque San Giuseppe church and the clock tower, and the Parco Colonna botanical garden which was founded by Florence Trevelyan.

The Villa Mon Repos keeps its ties close to this magical picture of Taormina. Boasting a grand Art Nouveau style dating back to the early 20th century, it blends in perfectly with the lush gardens and incredible sea views that surround it. It has played a huge part in the historic narrative of the town, too, having begun its life as a casino where Marlene Dietrich and Cary Grant were regular clientele. These days it retains its luxurious charm, offering guests a collection of stunning suites in the main house and a peaceful place to soak up the sea air and sun of Sicily. Tucked away in the heart of Ulivi Park, the Villa Mon Repos taps into Sicily’s natural heritage, exposing visitors to unique panoramas over Isola Bella and back towards the jutting peaks of Mount Etna.

Within its clutches it offers a large infinity pool and a private garden, and the glorious rooftop terrace was a firm favourite with Marlene Dietrich – she would gaze out at the sea much like I did during my stay, my hands resting on the cool marble wall. And, when in Italy, I like to eat, which made the Tout Va restaurant the ideal place to hang out as the Sicilian sun was setting. Featuring a menu of creative dishes by chef Christhian Busca, it offers a delicious taste of traditional Italy using only the freshest ingredients from local producers.

Villa Mon Repos is at the centre of it all. It is just 3km from the amazing Greek amphitheatre and the Palazzo Corvaia and there are some spectacular beaches that dot the surrounding coastline. The combination of foodie delights, ancient views, and contemporary culture make it the ideal hotspot for a brief Sicilian break.
