Classic charm seems to be on its way out of Berlin, with contemporary design and futuristic styles on the rise. Against this trend, the Titanic Gendarmenmarkt retains its classic elegance from its days as part of the German State Opera. Blending a unique, stylish décor with fascinating historical features, this is a one-of-a-kind hotel. Set in the heart of the city near the Gendarmenmarkt, it is also the perfect spot to get to know Berlin.
Finding a classic chic hotel in the heart of Berlin can be difficult to find amongst the city’s plentiful collection of new-age buildings and its ode to contemporary art. Amongst them, the Titanic Gendarmenmarkt is a hidden gem, which ties together the modern luxury that Berlin is renowned for with classic elegance.
Situated in the historical centre of Berlin, close to the popular Gendarmenmarkt, the Titanic Gendarmenmarkt is in the ideal position for exploring the city: from the tragic historic narratives, to the thriving food and drink scene, through to the modern art that has flourished throughout the streets. Despite this animated world, The Titanic Gendarmenmarkt harbours a peaceful ambiance. The building itself is a listed beauty, dating back decades and decades to when it was the costume house of the German State Opera. Though it was newly opened in February 2015, the hotel has managed to retain some of its fascinating history through its unique décor, consisting of plush wooden floors, grand furniture and rich reds that add colour to the whitewashed walls. It is hard not to imagine the hotel’s former life with a print of theatre curtains hanging over the bed frame.
Outside the rooms, the huge spa and fitness lounge offer a range of treatments and activities, whilst the oriental hammam adds a touch of whimsy to the running order. Culinary-wise, the hotel boasts the Beef Grill Club and its Mediterranean-style terrace, as well as the Schinkel Bar & Lounge with its exposed brick walls and rich colour palette. Both expose visitors to new worlds entirely, boasting classic Turkish cuisine and an endless menu of vintage cocktails.
Some might argue that Berlin’s classic elegance is being swallowed up by a dedication to contemporary design, but the Titanic Gendarmenmarkt effortlessly combines both of these. With its unique décor, its fascinating history, and its central location, it is far from the tragic ending that was bestowed upon its boat-shaped namesake.
