“Marrakech taught me colour,” said Yves Saint Laurent. If you let it, it can teach you too. My husband and I arrived in the Moroccan city, our eyes blinking and our jaws dropping. No matter how many times you visit this beguiling city, arriving from the UK it's like stepping out of a grey world and into a kaleidoscopic one. There are two musts in Marrakech. One is to get lost in the souks. The other is to stay in a riad. Riad Turquoise was our luxury accommodation, and it was close to the souks too!

  • The Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains is an opportunity to see some incredible landscapes, but also how the local Berber people live. Stunning scenery abounds, with the waterfall a highlight and destination of many walking paths. KM 21 Route de Ourika, Marrakech, 40000.
  • Rahba Kedima Square is a charming little square in the souks selling mostly spice. More peaceful than the average square, or tightly packed street, this is a place where you can sit and people watch quite happily.
  • Musee Douiria De Mouassine is a captivating little museum with an emphasis on architecture and craftsmanship. If you're at all interested in Moroccan design, this museum will capture your imagination. It's cool and tranquil inside too, making it the perfect place to duck out of the heat and bustle of the souks in the afternoon. www.douiria.com
