Terrasses d'Essaouira

Sun, surf, and calm for the perfect family holiday in Essaouira.

By Kathryn Atkins, your VeryChic correspondent
As our little boy neared his big 5th birthday, my husband and I wanted to go somewhere really special over the Easter break, somewhere where we could recapture the magic of our pre-parent travels in exotic climes. Thinking back to the chaos of our trips to Marrakech and Casablanca, we turned to the beautiful Moroccan coastal town of Essaouira, and to VeryChic’s expert choice of hotel, for a calmer and more peaceful holiday that still offered spice and sun. With the fantastic location and service at Les Terrasses d’Essaouira, we couldn’t have chosen anywhere better.

  • Though the closest airport is Essaouira-Mogador Airport, only flights from Paris with Royal Air Maroc or Transavia and seasonal flights from Marseille with Ryanair are available. The closest well served international airport is Marrakech Menara Airport (around a 2.5 hour drive away). Flights below are to Marrakech:

    - From the UK: Direct flights from London are offered by British Airways, Thomson, EasyJet and Ryanair. Thomson and Easyjet also operate direct flights from Bristol and Manchester. British Airways also fly indirect from other cities such as Belfast.

    - From Ireland: Ryanair fly direct from Dublin.

    - From Germany: Easyjet fly direct out of Berlin, Royal Air Maroc from Munich and Germanwings from Cologne. Ryanair also fly direct from Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

    - From the Netherlands: Transavia fly direct from Amsterdam while Ryanair fly direct from Eindhoven.

    - From Sweden, Denmark and Norway: Depending on the season, Norwegian fly direct from Stockholm and Oslo and Vueling occasionally fly indirectly. Norwegian also runs flights from Copenhagen.

    - From Finland: Indirect flights are sometimes available from Helsinki with Norwegian and Vueling.

    - From France: Between the following airlines, direct flights can be found from most big cities in France: Air France, Royal Air Maroc, EasyJet, Transavia and Ryanair.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • - Hotel transfer: This service is provided by the hotel for a surcharge, please contact the hotel for more information.

    - By taxi: Grande Taxis will take you to Essaouira from Marrakech airport during the daytime only. The trip takes about 3 hours and could cost anywhere between 450dh and 1000dh, depending on your bargaining skills and other factors such as the season or simply the mood of the driver (haggling is an art in Morocco and taxi drivers often go about it fairly aggressively).

    - By bus: Alternatively, take a taxi to the Supratours bus station, located right around the corner from the train station (‘gare de trains’) in Marakech city centre. Supratours (run by ONCF) offer cheap bus travel to Essaouira for 70dh per person, plus around 5dh extra per bag. There are four buses a day and it takes around 3 hours to get to the centre of Essaouira, right in between the Bab Sbaa and Bab Marrakech entrance to the Medina. It is not too hard to find the hotel as it is well sign posted, near the rampart. You may get there by foot, as it is fairly easy to walk around Essaouira, otherwise take a ‘petit-taxi’.
