Close to the French border, Figueres is a quintessentially Catalan city offering great food, fine wine and the beautiful Costa Brava beaches just fifteen minutes away. Not as touristy as nearby Barcelona but still teeming with cultural attractions, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with quiet cafés and squares, a historic Old Town and a fascinating castle. Not to mention the museum and theatre dedicated to Spain’s most renowned artist, Salvador Dalí! Hotel President **** is in the heart of all the action, boasting excellent facilities and ultimate luxury and style, with all the best sights within walking distance.

My 15 year old son had never shown much of an interest in anything, giving the classic teenager ‘fine’ response whenever I asked how his day at school was. So naturally I was delighted when he came home one day and couldn’t stop talking about a new project that his art class had started, focusing on the life and work of the weird and wonderful Salvador Dalí. So feeling spontaneous, and helped along by the fact that I happened to receive an email from VeryChic telling me about an amazing hotel deal, I booked us a family trip to Figueres in northeast Spain, the hometown to the world’s most celebrated surrealist. With the Hotel President **** located just a five minute walk from the world-famous museum and theatre, it was simply perfect.

We arrived at our hotel having already caught a glimpse at the museum, and my in-the-know son said it couldn’t have been more Dalí: a red castle-like building topped with giant eggs and stylised Oscar-like statues, studded with plaster-covered croissants and watched over by medieval suits of armour balancing baguettes on their heads. But hey, who said art had to make sense?! It was an entirely appropriate final resting place for this complex master of Surrealism.

Even our hotel had a rather Dalí-esque feel to it, with a quirky and stylish décor complemented by several paintings by the legend himself. Everything was new and shiny thanks to the recent renovation, and we were immediately made to feel welcome by the staff who were friendly, charming and very professional. They showed us to our room, a lovely spacious area with a balcony, a Jacuzzi in the bathroom and a wealth of modern comforts – including free Wi-Fi which my son used straight away to look up opening times and ticket information for the museum. He spent the next hour sitting on the balcony sketching in his art book, obviously completely inspired by his surroundings! We had a delicious bite to eat in the hotel restaurant which reminded me why I love Mediterranean food, and the excellent service and ambience made it even better.

My favourite part about arriving somewhere new is simply wandering around the town, finding my bearings and exploring the maze of streets. We strolled down the ‘La Rambla’ central avenue and into the old quarter, passing a mix of architectural styles including Baroque, Neoclassical and Modernist. We watched the world go by with a coffee and a game of dominoes in one of the numerous public squares - an iconic part of the Spanish way of life. By mid-afternoon, my son was itching to go to Dalí’s masterpiece, so we headed over there and despite knowing nothing about art, I was thoroughly impressed with what I saw. Dalí said, “You have to systematically create confusion, it sets creativity free”, which appears to be an explanation for the surrealist layout of the museum. I lost count of the amount of times I got lost inside the work of art, but we all agreed that it was the best museum we’d ever visited. The rest of our trip involved delicious food, excellent sightseeing in Figueres and luxurious comfort and relaxation in the hotel. But the best thing for me was seeing the smile on my son’s face, he was happier than I’d seen him in a long time.

It might be the biggest tourist attraction, but a trip to Figueres isn’t complete without visiting the Dalí Theatre and Museum. The building itself is a work of art imagined by the creative genius, and features the largest collection of surrealist artworks in the world.

Take a daytrip to Girona, a small and charming city that conceals a rich religious and historical heritage, with evidence of Roman, Arabic, and Jewish civilisations in the ancient architecture.
The castle of San Fernando is considered to be Europe’s largest bastion fortress, large enough to house 16,000 men – definitely worth a visit!

Figueres is a city on the Spanish Costa Brava, between Girona and the French border. Hotel President Figueres **** is located in the heart of this city, just a short walk from the famous Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dali designed by the master himself.

PLANE

The nearest airport is Girona–Costa Brava Airport, 52 km south-west of the hotel. Ryanair offer year-round & seasonal flights from many cities across Europe to Girona while some other low-cost airlines also operate seasonal flights from particular countries, like Thomson Airways from the UK or Transavia from the Netherlands.

Barcelona-El Prat Airport (150 km/ 93 mi) is the closest well served international airport, located 1 hour 30 minutes drive south-west of the hotel, it receives flights from many capitals and major cities across Europe.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

From Girona airport:
- By bus: The total journey takes around 1 hour and a half and costs 6€ to 8€. From Girona airport, take line 602 to Figueres. Check schedules and book your tickets on http://www.sagales.com/en. From Figueres it is a 10 minute walk to the hotel, so we recommend finishing your journey with a short taxi ride.

- By car: The drive to the hotel takes around 40 minutes.
Follow signs for E-15/AP-7/Girona/França/Francia and merge onto E-15/AP-7. Stay on that road for about half an hour and take exit 4 towards Roses. Then, follow signs to Figueres and merge on N-IIa. As you enter Figueres, the hotel is right across the street from a public parking.

From Barcelona El-Prat airport:

- By train: The total journey takes around 1 hour and a half and costs 17€ to 25€.
From the airport, take the R2 line to Barcelona Sants. There, take a AVE (high-speed train) to Figueres Vilafant. Finish your journey with a short taxi ride to the hotel.

- By car: The drive from the airport takes around 1 hour and a half.
Get on C-31 to Barcelona, and take exit 192 AB toward Girona/Lleida/Barcelona/Ronda de Dalt and merge onto B-22. Follow Barcelona/Tarragona/Lleida/Girona and merge onto C-58 toward Girona/AP-7/Terrassa/Manresa, take the AP-7 exit toward Griona/França. Merge on C-33 for about 10 minutes, then continue on AP-7 for about an hour. Take exit 4 towards Roses. Then, follow signs to Figueres and merge on N-IIa. As you enter Figueres, the hotel is right across the street from a public parking.
