Hotel Vecchio Borgo ★★★★

Elegant hotel in the heart of ancient Palermo.

By Ella Klyachitky, VeryChic correspondent
A country girl at heart, I am always guilty of wanting to whizz straight past a city and into a secluded spot in the countryside. However, when my husband and I were planning a little break to Sicily, an island with an abundance of idyllic countryside spots, he managed to convince me to make a stop in the city of Palermo. Well, I certainly am glad I listened to him! I followed his plans and let this ancient city teach me a thing or two about our destination's history and culture.

  • Trattoria Piccolo Napoli is a local restaurant that is a bit of a legend among locals, and certainly full of them. Run by the great-grandson of the original owner, this family business specialises in fresh fish and has amassed some secrets of the trade over the years! This is proper Italian cooking. www.piccolo-napoli.com
  • Monreale is under an hour away from the city, with frequent buses running from the centre. The historic town's main attraction is its cathedral, which some say is the most beautiful in Europe. Its mosaics are famous, with good reason, and its architecture and ambience are awe-inspiring. Piazza Guglielmo II, Monreale, 90046, Sicily, Italy.
  • Stanze al Genio may well be the most unique museum in Palermo. This private collection of painted tiles, mosaics and antiques set in a 17th century house is a must for anyone who loves craftsmanship. Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 11, Angolo Via Magione, 90133, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
  • The Oratory of the Rosary of St. Cita is one of the lesser known religious buildings in a city full of beautiful architecture. Yet this small church which is full of unique and incredible stucco work, is worth seeking out. Via Valverde 3, 90133, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
