Auberge du Pêcheur ★★★★

A good friend of mine is Belgian, and he’s always touting the Belgian countryside as the most beautiful in the world. I had recently been in touch with him and when he asked how I was, the first thing that came from my lips was that I needed a holiday! I assured him all was well, just that I was feeling uninspired and somewhat disconnected. Later I was grateful for this contact, for he directed me to a spot that would be just what the doctor ordered.

My friend went on to describe the Auberge du Pêcheur, a lovely hotel nestled on the banks of the Leie River, not far from Ghent in northern Belgium. A medium-sized hotel, it comprises of 32 charming rooms located in four different premises. On a warm and sunny day, it’s impossible to pass up the inviting terrace in the large inner courtyard. And during the winter, the courtyard features a cosy covered nook. Upon arriving, I was enchanted by the scenery and the gentle and serene ambience. I knew it would be the ideal spot for a rejuvenating rest.

The hotel was first opened in 1924 by the De Clercq family as a café with guest rooms. It soon became a popular meeting place, attracting artists inspired by the Leie. Its popularity necessitated the construction of annexes, first in 1960 and then in 1986. Fortunately, the original site has remained untouched, contributing to the inn’s overall charm.

I was struck not only by the surroundings but also by the elegance of the hotel. The furnishings and colour schemes are modern and original, thanks to interior designer Marie-France Stadsbader who obviously has a sharp eye for style, in collaboration with Flamant Home Interiors. Whether you opt for a standard or luxury room, or a junior or luxury suite, you’ll be impressed with the attention to detail on display. Luxury touches abound, such as fresh flowers and designer showers. You’ll enjoy modern conveniences such as a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi and breakfast in bed. This trip is all about you, and soon you’ll let the easy-going feeling flow in.

Dinner at the Auberge du Pêcheur is a unique experience all unto itself. Chef Dennis de Reu astounds inside his Cosy Brasserie with classical brasserie meals complemented with seasonal specials and personal touches. The hotel boasts a “Winefit” installation, allowing it to offer 16 different types of wine by the glass for tasting. This patented, professional system is one-of-a-kind and pours a perfect-tasting glass every time.

There’s no better way to explore the region than by getting nice and settled at the Auberge du Pêcheur. fter some time to unwind, I was ready to take in the area’s galleries, museums, and most importantly, nature. A boat trip down the Leie provided the peaceful feeling I sought by coming here. Overcome by serenity and wellbeing, I got my creative juices flowing and was ready to tackle my everyday afresh.
