Colourful, light and bright comforts near Morocco’s happiest town

By Vivien Fox, VeryChic correspondent
“Where would you like to go?” I asked. “Somewhere happy!” she said with a trusting smile. A week’s break in my busy diary had given me the chance to whisk my niece away for a treat. What a challenge! Somewhere happy … Pictures of the cobalt blue boats in the harbour of Essaouira and the rich earth-red of the buildings somehow made me want to smile. “Trust me, I know the very place” I told her. We were on our way to the Domaine de l’Arganeraie in Morocco’s prettiest, happiest town.

  • Galerie Aida. This bookshop-come-second-hand treasure trove is run by a friendly American. You can find books mostly in English at the front, but further back there are all sorts of interesting locally produced handcrafted gems. Prices are higher than in the markets, but at least you know everything is genuine. 2 Rue de la Skala, Essaouira. +212 524 476 290.
  • Patisserie Driss. We enjoyed ice cream, juice, coffee and fresh pastries in the quiet leafy courtyard of the patisserie. 10 Rue el Hajali, off Place Prince Moulay el Hassan.
  • Zouina Cheval is a centre for horse and camel riding about 3km from Essaouira in the village of Diabat. Here you can arrange treks from a few days up to a week but also lessons by the hour on horses or camels. The instructors are friendly, the animals in good condition and we were supplied with the appropriate safety equipment. www.zouina-cheval.com/en/home_uk.html
  • Essaouira Harbour. Take a stroll around the harbour for an unforgettable experience of all the blues you can imagine from the cerulean of the sky and the grey-greenish blue of the water, hardly visible through the massed ranks of cobalt blue and turquoise fishing boats. They provide fish straight off the boats for grilling on the little harbourside stalls. Another unforgettable experience!
