We fell in love with Catalonia on a visit to Barcelona many years ago, and the beaches of the Costa Brava are rightly world-famous. But it’s when you explore the surrounding villages, towns and hidden coves, and get to know the real character of the countryside, that you fully appreciate this unforgettable Spanish region. The friendly people, the language, the culture and most of all the cuisine, enchanted us on each of our return visits. So much so, in fact, that I was bold enough to plan a collection which would celebrate the regional culture and cuisine. Thankfully, a publisher liked the idea, I spent many months putting the background and recipes together, and now we were at the final stages.
Isn’t it lovely when serendipity lends a helping hand in life’s little conundrums? Not only was the apartment perfect for the occasion, but the VeryChic offer gave us a guaranteed upgrade to an apartment with a balcony, as well as parking included. The hotel was easy to find, the staff were friendly and helpful, and we were soon settled in our apartment.
It was clean and fresh, modern, and surprisingly spacious. Parquet floors and an elegant white sofa in the living area combined with a kitchen table and chairs to give us all the necessary space to spread out and relax. A cup of tea on the balcony in the afternoon sunshine made us feel at home straight away. Delicious breakfasts are served every morning, and in the evening the bar provides cocktails and snacks.
We had a wonderful week exploring the local town of Palafrugell and further afield to the medieval hill village of Calonge and the honey-golden harbour town of Palamós on the coast. We found local markets for the real Catalan ingredients I needed for my recipes and sampled some wonderfully atmospheric local restaurants and tapas bars. As soon as the proprietors of the restaurants we visited heard about my forthcoming book, they were keen to share their tips, recipes and favourite ingredients. I could see I would have to make a start on volume two as soon as the first one was safely with the printers! Thanks to our apartment in the Arrels d’Emporda ****, that would be very soon.
