I was adding the finishing touches to my book, Cuisine à la Catalonia, so no prizes for guessing what it’s about! I planned a final trip to my beloved Catalonia to test a few last recipes and compare them with the authentic cookery of the region. I needed a period of peace and quiet in which to cook, write and find inspiration for those final flourishes! The Arrels d’Emporda **** was the perfect setting, so perfect in fact, that it could have been conjured up by my guardian angel. With my friend, who also doubled as a trusty critic and taster, in tow, we set off for the Costa Brava.

  • Brises Restaurant – a traditional seafood restaurant in the lovely coastal town of Palamós. We had some taster tapas to start: The squid arrebozados was the best we’ve had and the paella rice was just right. Great service and friendly staff, too.

  • A great way to take in the spectacular variety of the scenery all in one go is a balloon flight. From La Bisbal d'Emporda, you see the forest-fringed beaches of the coast, including the huge Pals beach, and traditional villages such as Peratallada, Palau Sator and Verges. You also fly over the Medas Islands at the northern end of the Costa Brava. It’s spectacular!

  • Barcelona is served mainly by Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), located just 12 km / 7.5 mi southwest of the city centre.

    The airport receives flights from many capitals and major cities both within and outside of Europe. The airport is a main base for Vueling, and a hub for Iberia, Air Europa, Ryanair, and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

    Alternatively, it is possible to fly to Girona–Costa Brava Airport (GRO), located around 100km north of Barcelona, or to Reus Airport (REU), located around 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Barcelona.
