The Riad Tarifa

An authentic Moroccan riad in southern Spain, at the meeting point of Europe & Africa.

By Hannah Wright, VeryChic correspondent
Narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with tumbling jasmine and wrought-iron gates, castellated city walls, unspoilt rolling countryside and pristine white beaches are just a few of the treasures you’ll find in Tarifa. Situated at the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, it has a distinctly North African feel thanks to its fascinating historical origins, and gives a different climate and character to the rest of quintessential Andalucía. Welcome to The Riad, a rustic 17th-century building nestled in the heart of the Old Town, where luxury and charm await…

  • Castillo de Guzman is a history-filled castle built in 960 under the orders of Cordoban Caliph Abd ar.Rahman III. It’s an impressive and solidly-built Moorish fortification which played a very important part in early Spanish history, originally built to protect Tarifa against raids from the Moors in Africa and the Vikings in the north. It’s worth visiting even just for the spectacular views offered upon climbing up to the ramparts.

BY PLANE

  • The most convenient airport to fly to would be Seville airport. However, if flying from the UK, you may also consider flying to Gibraltar (British Airways, Monarch Airlines and EasyJet all offer direct flights from London, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester) and take a taxi or rent a car for a 30-minute drive to Tarifa. Seville requires slightly more travelling, but offers more options when travelling from other European cities:

    - From the UK: Direct flights from London to Seville are provided by low cost airlines Ryanair and EasyJet. Indirect flights are provided by British Airways, Iberia and Tap Portugal from other major cities in the UK.

    - From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights seasonally with low-cost airline Ryanair.

    - From Germany: Low-cost Vueling provide indirect flights (with one-stop usually in Barcelona) from Berlin and other major cities.

    - From the Netherlands: Vueling provide direct flights seasonally from Amsterdam. Ryanair also fly from Eindhoven.

    - From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: KLM, Vueling and Iberia fly indirectly from Stockholm in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark and also Helsinki in Finland. KLM and Vueling also fly indirectly from Oslo in Norway.

    - From France: Vueling provide direct flights from Paris and, along with TAP Portugal and Iberia, provide indirect flights from other major French cities. Low-cost airline Ryanair also provides direct flights from Paris and Marseille.
