Château Le Sallay was the former residence of the Dukes of Nevers from the 16th century. Its old name was "le Salle" which derives from the world "Salic", name of the law established by the Salian Franks. The castle itself was built on the site of an old fortress that dates back to around the 14th century, starting from the main building, which was the square tower with a staircase and chapel from the 16th century. Le Sallay was owned by several famous families from Nevers over the years, but most notably it was owned by Jean Clémenceau, Georges Clémenceau’s youngest son.

The driveway leads up to a vision from a fairytale with a rounded turret and criss-crossed windows. Château Le Sallay is a captivating sight all year round. Once the summer home of the Duke of Nevers, when you’re a guest and the staff know your name, you can feel like it’s your summer home too. The rooms are decorated in soft hues of beige and warm browns adorned with fluffy rugs and cosy touches. They are spacious with a double bed and large bathroom with a bathtub, and, even better, you can expect views out over the manicured gardens.

Fortunately Le Sallay’s restaurant is not short of a grand menu, matched by the chandeliers and soft pastel colours of the interior.
