  • Try the Funivia Colle Eletto. Imagine a ski lift designed by the Cirque du Soleil and you’ll have some idea of these small open-top cages that whiz you upright to the viewpoint over Gubbio. Go for the ride and stay for the beautiful views and pretty little basilica at the top. Gubbio. Opening hours: 9am-8pm daily in summer, 10am-5pm Thu-Tue in winter.
  • The caves of Orvieto. This charming hilltop village is more famous for its picture-postcard houses and streets than anything else, but look closer and you will find a vast network of 440 caves that have been used through history for everything from Roman siege refuges to WWII bomb shelters. Piazza Duomo 24, Orvieto. Opening hours: tours 11am, 12.15pm, 4pm & 5.15pm daily.
  • The visual feast that is Orvieto’s gothic cathedral. This 13th-century marvel stands out for its black and white striped outer walls with an incredibly ornate façade featuring rainbow frescoes and gleaming multicoloured mosaics. Piazza Duomo 26. Opening hours: 9.30am-6pm Mon-Sat, 1-5.30pm Sun, shorter hours in winter. Admission: 3 euros.
