Grand Hotel Central ★★★★★

I can’t help but note that this is a hotel defined by details, with its subtle hipness, it feels like a New York loft with a European soul. If the clean design and modern touches don’t make me feel far from home, the Ibiza-style rooftop lounge and infinity pool take escapism to a new level. Lying on a gorgeous lounger, facing the Barcelona sun, with a soft breeze blowing over me, I have found my peace.

When I first arrived, I was greeted by staff who were at once discreet and exceptionally accommodating. I could immediately tell this was not a hotel for the average tourist. When they showed me to my room, I couldn’t believe my luck! The room was so spacious, the design felt fresh and understated. There was even a Nespresso machine in the room to get me through the morning until I could step outside for my first café con leche.

Ideally located, sandwiched between El Born and the Gothic quarter, there is much to discover within walking distance from the hotel, like the Picasso Museum, old Roman ruins and the renowned music hall, the Palau de la Musica Catalana. After exhausting the city’s splendours, we returned to the hotel and its oasis of calm. The decision of where to dine was a simple. There’s no better introduction to local cuisine than Bistro Helena, renowned for its market-fresh produce and honest cooking.

As we headed up to the roof for a final evening at the Grand Hotel Central, I am momentarily overwhelmed by the vastness of the Barcelona sky. Sky Bar is aptly named, the perfect place to enjoy a final evening cocktail. Soon the sky is awash in pink and purple, the city lights begin to glitter like an ornamental carpet unfolding, and the magic of the moment almost makes me pinch myself. I wonder if, when I finally leave, the whole experience will seem like a beautiful dream.
