In a sea full of gems, Palermo has always been one of the Mediterranean’s crowning jewels, fought over through history by everyone from the Carthaginians to the Romans to the Byzantines to the Saracen Arabs, the French and the Spanish. This long and dramatic history means Palermo contains an intriguing blend of architectures, gastronomies and cultures, ideal for any world traveller seeking to venture beyond the beaten path. The Hotel Garibaldi ****, located opposite one of Palermo’s most famed theatres, is the ideal backdrop for such a scene.
The stage:
Palermo, a chaotic, bustling Sicilian city of character, tradition and art. Its position in the middle of the Mediterranean has brought an exotic blend of various civilisations to its shores, each leaving behind its mark and distinct cultural contribution. The Hotel Garibaldi, a beautiful historic architectural masterpiece just 500m from the lively port, and only a 20 minute walk from Palermo’s imposing cathedral. Beyond the stately hotel facade, however, you’ll find an impressively modern and fresh interior taking its cues from the best of contemporary culture. The rooms are light, large, and decorated in a sophisticated fashion with monochrome or muted palettes, luxurious linens and smooth, sleek furniture design. The amenities provided in the hotel are suitably high-tech too; including full Wi-Fi access, a minibar and either a whirlpool bath or a hydro-massage shower in the well-designed bathrooms.

Of course, the greatest setting and stage in the world are nothing without a cast of diligent professionals working hard both behind the scenes and front of house to pull everything together. Though there was a slight language barrier caused by my inability to speak anything more than A-Level Italian, the hotel staff were polite, helpful, and thoroughly attentive to my needs. Booking with VeryChic went a long way to improve service further, of course, ensuring that the warm welcome we received was supplemented with a free upgrade to the Junior Suite, and a bottle of wine awaiting our arrival. - Via Libertà. Located close to the Hotel Garibaldi, the Via Libertà was once nicknamed by Wagner the Champs-Elysées of Sicily. Aside from the beautiful architecture, it’s also one of the most fashionable areas of Palermo, and an excellent shopping area.
- If you like your shopping a little more rustic, the Vucciria is a colourful market in the centre of Palermo, selling a huge variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. It’s an essential authentic Sicilian experience.

BY PLANE
Palermo is served by Falcone-Borsellino Airport (or simply, Palermo Airport), located about 30 km (19 mi) northwest of the city, or around 27 minutes away from your hotel. It welcomes a good number of airlines from a wide number of European destinations, including London Gatwick, London Heathrow and London Stansted as well as Dublin.
HOW TO GET FROM PALERMO AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL
- By train: A shuttle train runs regularly between the airport and Central Station every 6 minutes between 5.40am and 11.40pm. The journey takes about 55 minutes and the ticket costs around 4.50€.
- By car: Car rental companies are available from the airport although it is recommended to book online and in advance. The airport is only a 35 minute drive from the hotel. Follow the signs for Palermo via the A29. Take the exit for Via Belgio / Viale Michelangelo. At the roundabout, follow round going over the top of the motorway you just left and take the third exit to the right, down Via Belgio.
