It doesn’t get much more English than the Danubius Hotel’s fantastic St. John’s Wood location. Lord’s, the home of cricket, is just over the road, while the Beatles’ Abbey Road Studios and that zebra crossing are just around the corner. These days the area is one of the most sought-after addresses in the city, home to fashionable boutiques, fancy restaurants and plenty of rich and famous residents. This is, then, the perfect spot for a VeryChic break in the British capital. With its lovely restaurant, faultlessly comfortable rooms, 24-hour fitness centre and all of London’s iconic attractions just a short hop away on the bus, the Danubius is the ideal London base whether you are here for business or leisure.

The Abbey Road Studios may actually be a fifteen-minute stroll from the Danubius Hotel, but I found I couldn’t stay in St. John’s Wood without having my head filled with the countless legendary songs recorded there by the Beatles. The most famous band in history are so inextricably linked to this corner of London, even if these days it is more renowned as a hotbed of luxurious mansions and celebrity residents. There is at least some overlap between the musical past and the A-list present: Paul McCartney still has a home in the area, joining a plethora of stars such as Sir Richard Branson, Kate Moss and Keith Richards who have splashed out on some of the city’s most expensive properties here over the years.

From the outside, the rather austere, plain brick facades of the hotel – a relic from 1960’s development – may not quite live up to the upscale mansions which surround it, but you should never judge a book by its cover. As soon as you cross the threshold into the bright and airy lobby, with high ceilings, gleaming marble floors and cosy leather sofas, you learn to forget about the outside and focus on the elegant and inviting interior. Upon arrival, I was swiftly greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smile (who said all Londoners are unfriendly?), and shown up to a bedroom which was just as easy on the eye.

The décor is simple but classy, with wood panelling and crisp white bed linen, and the room even felt surprisingly spacious for a standard room in central London. Amenities are suitably luxurious for a four-star hotel, including large flat-screen TVs, excellent bathrooms with delectable complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee facilities and exceptionally comfy beds which are an absolute delight to fall into after a ‘hard day’s night’. Downstairs, guests even enjoy access to a state-of-the-art, 24-hour fitness centre. From my window, I looked out over Lord’s Cricket Ground, the home of cricket. For a sports fan like myself, this was an exciting sight to open my curtains to every morning, and even those who despise cricket would surely appreciate the two hundred years of history and tradition of the iconic stadium.

On the other side of the hotel, the rooms look out onto the large green expanse of Regent’s Park, which I would certainly recommend as stop number one of your sightseeing tour if you haven’t stayed in this part of London before. Originally created as an estate for the aristocracy to build their mansions and palaces, the park is now home to the famous London Zoo, an open air theatre where Shakespeare plays are performed during the summer months, an ornamental lake, a stretch of Regent’s Canal and plenty of vibrant flowerbeds and fragrant rose gardens. In short, a rather idyllic urban oasis. After a few peaceful hours here, you can happily stroll around the leafy streets of St. John’s Wood and admire the millionaires’ mansions, take your photo on London’s most well-known zebra crossing on Abbey Road, and then either take an easy and convenient bus ride or jump in the tube to shoot off to the other endless attractions dotted around this remarkable city.

London’s dining scene is truly blossoming at the moment and gradually putting an end to those disparaging clichés about British cuisine, from fancy Michelin-starred restaurants to market stalls selling street food which packs a punch. However, if you feel overwhelmed by the choice on offer, the Minsky’s restaurant back at the Danubius is a brilliant option. Aside from offering a gorgeous full English breakfast every morning and a quintessential afternoon tea, the restaurant offers a tempting seasonal menu, some exquisite home-made pizzas, a weekend carvery and even an Indian buffet on Wednesday nights. The thing I loved best about the restaurant? It has to be the convenience of only having to stumble back up the stairs to fall into that delightfully snug bed.

So, with a top restaurant to go with the flawless rooms and a prestigious location in one of the world’s best cities, the Danubius really offers all you ask for, whether you are on a sightseeing city break or a whirlwind business trip.

Spend a few hours in Regent’s Park. If you come in the summer then you might be lucky enough to catch an open air performance of Shakespeare, but if not then you can still enjoy this huge, peaceful oasis and perhaps even drop in for a visit to London Zoo.
Only separated from Regent’s Park by the zoo, climb up Primrose Hill to enjoy some of the best views of London’s skyline from anywhere in the city.
Visit the Wallace Collection, one of London’s best museums and a much more manageable size than some of the more famous ones. HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

From London Heathrow:
- By train: The cheapest method is taking the underground (metro) Piccadilly Line (dark blue) into central London. There are various ways to change onto the Central Line (red) for Marble Arch.
It is also possible to take The Heathrow Express to London Paddington Station, taking 15 minutes. Tickets are around £26 single (£21 in advance) or £39 return (£34 in advance). From there you can take the Bakerloo line (brown) towards Elephant & Castle. Get off at the 2ns stop Marylebone. Walk to the Dorset Square Marylebone Station (Stop U) and take the bus 82 towards North Finchley Bus Station. Get off at the 2 stop Park Road Lords Cricket Ground (N). From this stop continue straight down Park Rd. and make the first left onto Lodge Rd. The hotel will be on the left. You can also take a taxi from London Paddington Station to the hotel. This will take about 5 minutes and cost 10€ to 15€ (around £7-£11).

From London Gatwick:
- By train: The Gatwick Express to London Victoria runs regularly, taking 30 minutes. Tickets are around £20 single (£10 for children) or £35 return (£18 for children); it is a little cheaper if booked in advance. For around £15, Southern Trains operate four times an hour to London Victoria, taking around 35-40 minutes. From there take the underground Victoria Line (pale blue) to Oxford Circus then change for the Central Line (red) to Marble Arch.

- By bus: National Express operates direct coach services also to London Victoria once an hour with a journey time of around 90 minutes. Tickets are around £8 single, £15 return. Walk from Victoria Station to the Green Line Coach Station (Stop 6) and take the bus 757 towards Luton. Get off at the 3rd stop Gloucester Place (Stop Z). Then walk to the Marylebone Road (Stop Q) bust stop and take the bus 13 towards Golders Green. Get off once again at the 3rd stop Park Road Lords Cricket Ground (N). From this stop continue straight down Park Rd. and make the first left onto Lodge Rd. The hotel will be on the left. You can also take a taxi from London Victoria Station to the hotel. This will take about 5 minutes and cost 20€ to 25€ (around £14-£18).
A low-cost, frequent and non-stop transfer service is also operated by EasyBus from North and South terminals to Earls Court/West Brompton. The journey takes about an hour. From the West Brompton (Stop P) take the bus 74 towards Baker Street. Get off at the 15th stop Dorchester Hotel (Stop T). Take the bus 82 towards North Finchley Bus Station and get off at the 8th stop Park Road Lords Cricket Ground (N). From this stop continue straight down Park Rd. and make the first left onto Lodge Rd. The hotel will be on the left. You can also take a taxi from Earls Court/West Brompton Station to the hotel. This will take about 5 minutes and cost 25€ to 30€ (around £18-£22).

BY TRAIN

From within the UK trains can be found and booked via National Rail. From mainland Europe trains can be found and booked via Rail Europe. Together, the companies Eurostar and Thalys operate high speed train services from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France to London King’s Cross St Pancras International Take the bus 214 towards Highgate School at King's Cross and St Pancras (Stop T) stop. Get off at the 5th stop Camden High St Delancey St (Stop E) and walk to the Pratt Street Bayham Street (Stop CS) stop, where you can take the bus 274 towards Lancaster Gate. Get off at the 10th stop Park Road Lords Cricket Ground (P).
