This is how you are supposed to feel on holiday! Step out to enjoy the fresh sea breeze around the Old Port, admire the gaiety of the multicoloured fishing boats mingling with luxury yachts, sample the tempting range of cafés and restaurants, and browse the artisan shops still to be found around the harbour. When you take a boat trip to visit the famous Calanques, those rocky inlets on the coast, the limestone giving the water its famous turquoise colour, you will appreciate why Marseilles is a visitors’ paradise.

Or perhaps, a stroll may be more appropriate for the trek up the hill to the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde (or if marching is really not your style, there is always the little train from the Old Port…) There you will find a richly decorated main church and even richer views of the city and the sea. Another stroll will take you to Le Panier, Marseille’s answer to Montmartre. Its narrow, traffic-free streets are full of small artisan boutiques and lively cafés. In the evening, before returning to the home comforts of Appart’hôtel Odalys, find a quirky music bar on the harbour front. You will find yourself dancing to the timeless spirit of Marseille.
