France is one of those countries that we think we know. But in fact it is this assumption that shields so many of its more secret places from tourist invasion. Having been to the well-trodden destinations countless times - Paris, Provence, Marseille, the Alps - I decided that this time, the unbeaten track was calling. Set in Cévennes National Park, Banne is a tiny medieval village surrounded by rolling countryside as far as the eye can see. It is a walkers paradise, and most visitors come here to take part in the extensive range of activities – hiking, mountain biking, canyoning, kayaking, rafting and climbing to name a few. I, on the other hand, was simply in need of a relaxing getaway and a breath of fresh air, and I certainly found it at Auberge de Banne.
Even as I approached the village and the road started to climb rapidly through the rocky hills, I could tell that the views would be far-reaching, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It is so picturesque in fact that it has been used as a film set several times, which you’ll appreciate as you walk through the auberge, proudly displaying signed photos of famous celebrities who have stayed there in the past. The whole establishment oozes authenticity and charm, with a friendly ambience that invites you to completely unwind and forget about any modern-day worries you might have.
The well appointed bedrooms are decorated in a country-chic style to match the rest of the building, and each one features a king-sized bed, an ensuite bathroom and a terrace with a pretty table and chairs encircled by potted plants. My countryside escape was all about getting back to nature, but if I was in need of a technology fix, there were plenty of modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi and LED TV.
You can easily explore the area by foot, and take in the atmosphere of quintessential French village life. Stroll around the ruins of the castle, play a game of boules with the locals perhaps have a go at some of the myriad activities on your doorstep. Return to the comfort of the Auberge de Banne for a delicious meal in its Michellin-starred restaurant.
Situated on the market square of Banne, the restaurant serves tasty, regional cuisine prepared from fresh produce. You can sit inside, surrounded by exposed stone walls, authentic posters and old lemonade bottles lining the shelves, or alfresco on the terrace overlooked by the castle. Indulge in traditional fare from the set menu or à la carte. After a delicious three-course feast, I sat on the shady terrace with a drink and an ice-cream from the bar, and I felt the weight of all my worries lift off me, and decided that this had been my most special holiday to date.
