Donna Coraly Resort

Having never visited the Syracuse region of Sicily before, I had no idea what lay in store for me, so it was somewhat nervously that I debarked from the plane and drove out on the open road towards my destination. And what a first impression: the timeless surrounding landscape was astounding, dominated by the impressive Iblei Mountains which sloped down gently towards a coastline fringed with sandy white beaches and idyllic bays.

As I arrived at the Donna Coraly Resort, my eyes widened. Before me stood a grand establishment set within a 600 year old fortified holding, complete with watchtower and moat, hinting at the rich history that lay beneath. In the past, The San Michele estate belonged to the Grande family and the resort was named after Coraly Grande Sinatra, a noble woman who loved the arts and travelling, as well as being an avid supporter of women’s right. Her grand-daughter Lucia endeavoured to pay tribute to her by creating an aristocratic atmosphere, and I’m so glad she did.

But don’t think that I was limited to old-fashioned lodgings – quite the contrary. My spacious suite was the perfect mix of old and new, with 18th century furniture and floors made from local stones incorporated within the elegant design. Bright splashes of Mediterranean blues and reds completed the welcoming atmosphere. What’s more, the whole complex was ensconced in a vast verdant Mediterranean garden. I jumped at the first chance to amble through this peaceful paradise, breathing in the incomparable sweet scent of orange blossoms and the fresh sea air.

Of course, one of the main reasons to venture to Italy is the fantastic cuisine. The breakfast was simply divine and as well as dining I savoured home-made dinners prepared by the in-house chef, using delicious seasonal ingredients. For me, the Donna Coraly Resort is the perfect combination of old and new, retaining the authenticity of its Sicilian roots whilst catering for modern travellers who are keen to experience the sights of this wonderful island. Much like Syracuse has dutifully remembered its rich history, I will forever hold on to the memory of my glorious week in Sicily.
