Each year, millions of visitors flock starry-eyed to the Côte D’Azur; and with its crystal blue waters, eternal sunshine and exclusive reputation, it’s not difficult to see why. But it’s not just the Mediterranean climate and stunning coastal views that lure visitors in; but the promise of glitz, glamour and a wealth of fascinating culture. This year we succumbed to its enchanting call: and where better for us to stay than in Nice? What’s more, we managed to find the perfect spot: the alluring La Malmaison Nice Boutique Hotel.
We floated up the tree-lined Boulevard Victor Hugo as if we were in a dream. Tall traditional buildings lined the side of the broad street and I grabbed my husband’s hand as we finally reached the impressive La Malmaison Nice Boutique Hotel. Upon entering we couldn’t help but marvel at the sumptuous décor of the reception area: clean lines and colours with vibrant splashes of plush purple.
We were delighted to see that the style continued up to our guest room, the Mediterranean sunlight streaming through the vast windows on to the luxurious fabrics and furnishings. As we’d arrived in the early morning, we decided to take it easy and spend an hour or two relaxing on our wonderful furnished balcony, before taking our rumbling stomachs downstairs to try out our complimentary buffet breakfast. We were truly spoilt with a generous spread of hot and cold breakfast foods, perfect fuel for a day of exploring this beautiful city.
The prime location of this stunning hotel, in the heart of Nice, meant we were walking distance to most of the city’s most coveted sights; we decided to start in the characterful Old Town. We lost ourselves in the maze of meandering medieval lanes, browsing in the unique boutique shops and crossing traditional courtyards overflowing with charming cafes and elegant fountains.
It was nearly impossible to choose somewhere for dinner in this gastronomic city. Content after a delectable meal at the hotel’s recommended restaurant, we decided to take a sunset stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais, and it was truly magnificent. The azure Mediterranean waves softly lapped the beach as we wandered next to palm trees swaying in the warm breeze. Vibrant shades of pink, purple and orange filled the horizon as the sun slowly sank down to meet the crystal ocean - we could see now why it’s named the Bay of Angels.
