As anyone who has visited Marrakech will attest, you can truly sense a tangible buzz and thrill for life in the air whilst driving through the city’s dusty red roads. But after a tiring journey, I wasn’t quite ready for it yet; I just needed somewhere peaceful to compose myself before diving into the exhilaration of my Moroccan escapade. So it was with great anticipation that I finally arrived at Demeures d’Orient : and I couldn’t have imagined anything better.
But I didn’t want to escape the red completely, just tone it down: I was staying in the luxury Vénitienne suite, full of warm rust tones that reflected in the glittering chandelier and mirrors. This was true Moroccan style: the spacious sitting area, ancient furniture and marble and tadelakt bathroom were complemented by the generous refreshments placed at my disposal for my arrival. I tucked into a delicious Moroccan pastry as I wandered through the doors of my suite, which opened up onto the central patio and the glittering outdoor pool.
Once suitably relaxed, it was time to dip my finger into those most vibrant red shades. Stepping out the hotel into the scorching sunshine, I found myself in the most vivacious area of Marrakech, ideal for sight-seeing and soaking up the exotic ambience. I spent my first happy afternoon wandering around the lively medina, gratefully accepting glasses of fresh orange juice from streetside vendors and watching snake charmers in the main Jemaa el-Fnaa square with awe.
Of course, all of this adventuring requires some top-notch refreshment. On stepping back into the serene oasis of the riad, my mouth was watering at the thought of the delicacies to come. The riad’s restaurant excels in offering authentic local cuisine, including the specialities of sumptuous beef or lamb saffron Tanjia as well as fresh fish from Essaouira. You can savour your delectable meal under the twinkling Moroccan stars, on the patio or fireside in the restaurant where the flames will warm your cheeks.
After my stay in Marrakech, I can say that it truly does deserve its title as the “Red City” – exhilarating, vibrant and eye-catching…but the tranquil haven of the Demeures d’Orient riad is truly the glittering ruby in her crown.
