I’m lucky to have had reasons to travel to London many times over the years, from business conferences to day trips and romantic mini breaks. We all know and love the classic tourist spots, but for me, part of the capital’s ever-changing charisma is that each area seems to have a distinct aura, its own character, just waiting to be discovered. So when I was sent for another weekend work jaunt, I was searching for a new intriguing spot, somewhere exciting and lively…and the cool ambience of the East End ticked all the boxes and more. And where better to stay than in the brand spanking new Arbor City Hotel ****, poised on the gateway to vibrant Brick Lane and the doorstep of stylish Shoreditch? This was going to be a weekend to remember.

I'd managed to cover a fair amount of ground in London in my time; I’d wandered around the parks on sunny days, shopped on all the major streets and queued for the endless tourist attractions. But this time, I thought, I was after a taste of the real London – somewhere I could get a feel of the diverse and multicultural melting pot that it is today, without being too far removed from the centre. So where to go? A friend of mine had raved about the newly-renovated Arbor City Hotel, in the heart of Whitechapel – I looked online, and the deal was done: the irresistible mixture of this mysterious undiscovered area and luxurious contemporary style was enough to lure me in.

The first thing that struck me as I emerged from Aldgate East Tube station was the pure ease of access. As well as being a mere minute’s walk from here, the hotel was also within walking distance to Liverpool Street and Fenchurch train stations. That certainly helped ease the usual dose of transport stress! The hotel warmly welcomed me in with its arty reception area and the fashionable design continued up to my Club Room: completely renovated in 2015, the modern room was full of light and contemporary touches, as well as all the amenities I could ask for, including free Wi-Fi and a chic bathroom.

Fortunately, my work commitments left me with an afternoon to stroll around the fashionable ambience of my newly discovered area. I was delighted to be a 10-minute walk away from the boutiques, art galleries and restaurants of Shoreditch, and a short Tube journey from London’s most revered attractions. Despite all my visits to the capital, I’d never quite managed to make it to the Tower of London – but, as it was only 15 minutes’ walk away, this was my chance!

It’s safe to say that, worn out and full to the brim with new cultural knowledge, my stomach was yearning to be filled too; it was time for a trip to the on-site restaurant. After I’d devoured a plateful of delicious food and a refreshing cocktail in the locally renowned bar, a brewing yawn let me know it was nearly time to turn in…I gratefully curled up in the peace of my snug double bed. During my time at the Arbor City Hotel, I realised something: work trips don’t always just have to involve work - I can’t wait for my next one!

- London Luton Airport (LTN), located 29 miles (47 km) north of central London
- London City Airport (LCY), located 6.9 miles (11 km) east of central London

Between them, they receive flights from most capitals and major cities across Europe.

How to get from the airport to the hotel

From London Heathrow:
- By train: The Heathrow Express isn’t the cheapest but is certainly the fastest method, taking 15 minutes to London Paddington. Tickets are around £26 single (£21 in advance) or £39 return (£34 in advance). Regular train services also run, taking twice the time, for around £10. The cheapest method is the Underground (tube) Piccadilly Line, taking closer to an hour.

From London Gatwick:
- By train: The Gatwick Express to London Victoria runs regularly with a journey time of 30 minutes. Tickets are around £20 single (£10 for children) or £35 return (£18 for children); it is a little heaper if booked in advance. For around £15 single, Southern Trains operate four times an hour to London Victoria, taking around 35 minutes.

- By bus: The National Express operates direct coach services to London Victoria once an hour with a journey time of around 90 minutes. Tickets are around £8 single, £15 return.

A low-cost, frequent and non-stop transfer service is also operated by EasyBus from North and South terminals to Earls Court/West Brompton. The journey takes about an hour.

From London City:
- By train: There is a DLR train station in front of the airport; it is three stops to Canning Town where you can change for underground (metro) services. It is also possible to take bus number 474 to Canning Town.

- By taxi: London City airport is close to central London, therefore a cab will cost around £30.

From London Luton:
- By train: A shuttle bus operates to Luton Airport Parkway Station. East Midlands Trains run to London St Pancras/ Kings Cross in about 25 minutes. Tickets are around £18 single and £30 return.

- By bus: The National Express to London Victoria (about 35 minutes) is around £10 single and £15 return. EasyBus run to Baker Street (60 minutes) which is often cheaper but prices vary.

From London Stansted:
- By train: The Stansted Express runs to London Liverpool Street in about 50 minutes, for around £23 single and £33 return.

- By bus: The National Express to London Liverpool Street (about 75 minutes) is around £8 single and £15 return. EasyBus run to Baker Street (75 minutes) which is often cheaper but prices vary.

BY METRO

Aldgate East tube station is the nearest to the hotel. It is served by the Hammersmith & City Line (the pink line) and the District Line (the green line).
