Over the years, I’ve stepped out of planes into the warming Mediterranean breeze more times than I can count. But on this trip, instead of my usual routine of heading to a bustling touristic resort, we were on our way to the Hotel Galanias, a typically Sardinian establishment nestled in the beautiful untouched landscape of the island’s east coast.
My first impression definitely was a wonderful one. The hotel is perched proudly high up on a hill, overlooking the wonderful golden sand of the La Torre di Bari beach below. The three main orange-toned buildings are built on different levels which gently slope down towards the glistening sea below, contrasting pleasantly against the surrounding vibrant greenery of the beautiful gardens. Upon arrival, I was heartily welcomed with a warm smile and a refreshing welcome drink before being shown to my room, which was elegantly decorated in a traditional local style, even including artisanal furniture and tapestries lovingly handmade by local craftsmen. As well as retaining its characterful regional ambience, it also was well equipped with all the necessary contemporary amenities, such as a TV and air-conditioning.
The communal areas were the perfect place to lie back and enjoy the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, either with a quick dip into the cool turquoise water of the panoramic pool, surrounded by pretty granite stones, or with a stint of basking on a nearby sun lounger. And when we felt our stomachs start to growl, the hotel’s restaurant offered an ideal selection of regional and Mediterranean dishes that are created with high-quality local ingredients: needless to say, our mouths were watering!
For me, holidays are all about trying new things, and here I was spoilt for choice. As well as offering classes in pilates and yoga, just the thing for relaxation, there was also the chance to have a go at photography, something I’d always wanted to try. What’s more, the rugged landscape of this stunning region is an undisturbed paradise, inviting hiking, cycling and endless other outdoor activities. I came to Sardinia looking forward to a slice of my beloved Mediterranean sun, but left with a deep appreciation for the natural wilderness of this beautiful Italian island – all thanks to the wonderful Hotel Galanias!
