  • The Guevara Tower. This fortress-house was built by King Alfonso of Aragon in 1433 to defend the coast. Rumours claim the famous artist Michelangelo lived there for a short time and some of the frescoes you can see were created by him. Via Nuova Cartaromana, 80077 Ischia, Italy. +39 081 3331146.
  • Hiking Mount Epomeo. Standing at 789 metres, this is the highest peak on Ischia. You will find it excellently signposted. Although quite a steep climb in places, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of not only the entire island, but also the Gulf of Naples and its surrounding islands.
  • Island hopping. Easily accessible from several ports on the island is a good timetable of boats and ferries. The famous Capri, with its high end living, continues to attract many visitors. Only 30 minutes away from Ischia you will find its neighbour, Procida. This is a smaller island and full of colour and character.
  • Renting a scooter. The island of Ischia is compact, with some small and winding roads. Hopping on a scooter allows you to reach hidden coves and charming bars at the top of the island or the small fishing ports.
  • Traditional pizza at Il Pizzicotto. This is an area of Italy famed for its pizza. Ischians will argue that on the island, you will find better pizza than in Naples. Il Pizzicotto serves up authentically excellent quality. Corso Matteo Verde, 22, 80075 Forio NA, Italy. +39 081 987438.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • The hotel can provide a transfer from Naples airport/train station for 45€ per person each way (boat included), or alternatively you can use public transport:

    - By public transport: The Alibus airport bus shuttles between the airport and just two other stops in Naples city centre: the Central Train Station (Napoli Centrale) and Molo Beverello Port. Tickets are 4€ single (or 3€ if bought in advance).

Get off at the Molo Beverello Port. From there it is possible to take a hydrofoil with Alilauro, SNAV or Caramar for between 15€ - 20€ (around £11.20 - £15) and taking around an hour. Caremar also offer regular ferry services for between 10€ and 15€, taking closer to an hour and a half. There are two possible ports to arrive at, but Ischia Porto is the closest to the hotel. From there it is a short walk around to the other side of the port, or an even shorter taxi ride to the hotel.

    - By car: Most of the major car rental companies can be found at Terminal 1 Arrivals. Turn left when leaving the airport; follow the signs left and onto the Autostrada, then follow the sign for NAPOLI zona portuale. After this, follow by signs for Napoli with a little picture of a boat and eventually signs for Porto.

Car ferries leave from Calata Porta di Massa port, which is an adjacent pier to Molo Beverello Port (about 200 metres away). There are two possible ports to arrive at, take a ferry to Ischia Casamicciola which is slightly closer to the hotel.

From the port it is a 15 minute walk or a quick taxi ride to the hotel.
