When two dear family friends of ours asked whether we wanted to go away with them this year, my husband and I were absolutely delighted. After some deliberation, we settled on a tour around the beautiful Cyclades archipelago, stopping off in the history hub of Athens first. And how better to begin a much anticipated getaway than with a slice of luxury? The suites of Andronis Athens, in the heart of the city’s historical centre, are relaxed and luxurious, whilst still being within close proximity to the ancient relics Athens is so revered for. It was only the first stepping stone on our Greek adventure, but it was an excellent one!

You really can buy just about anything, from jewellery, trinkets and paintings to clothes and fresh fruit and what’s more, it’s just a stone’s throw from the hotel!   • If you fancy escaping the city, follow the coastal road 70km south of Athens to Cape Sounion, Attica’s southeastern tip. Gazing at the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon as the sun slowly lowers over the Aegean Sea in a spectacle of pink, purple and orange is a truly magical experience.
