So wrote the legendary Roman poet, Virgil, a quote usually translated as “all our sweetest hours fly fastest”. This, I find, is certainly the case when it comes to a visit to Rome. The city is one blessed with ancient monuments, fantastic artwork, a vibrant nightlife, and some of the world’s best cuisine and architecture. Just as Rome was not built in a day, it most definitely cannot be seen in a single weekend. The Hotel Dei Mellini, with its central location, is ideal to make the most of what this wonderful city has to offer. British architect Harry Gregory has done a superb job of seamlessly combining two 19th century private residences, maintaining a classical Italian feel while adding his own distinctive contemporary touch. The mirrors, marble and masterpieces on the walls (the hotel boasts works of art by several prestigious artists) maintain a traditional feel, while the understated yet modern furnishings, décor and sculptures keep the hotel in the 21st century. Entering the lobby, you do not have long to admire your new surroundings before you are given a warm benvenuto by the incredibly friendly staff. After showing you to your room, the staff will also happily inform you about getting to well-known attractions such as the Vatican, the Colosseum, and Trevi fountain, as well as about the little-known gems of the city.

After a hectic day of sightseeing, there is nothing more soothing than soaking in the last of the afternoon sunshine on the Hotel Dei Mellini’s spectacular roof terrace. Exploding with colour as pretty flowers bring the whole space to life, and offering excellent vistas from its rooftop vantage point, this an exquisite spot in which to enjoy an aperitif before heading out to sample Rome’s famous culinary scene in the evenings. It will almost come as something of a relief that the hotel’s gastronomic offering is rather limited aside from its delicious Mediterranean breakfasts, as it is wonderful to have an excuse to go out and experience the city’s effervescent night life.
