This year, our summer jaunts truly had been a whirlwind tour of culture-packed European cities; treasured memories full of sundrenched days wandering from park, to museum, to delightful restaurant to taste regional specialities. And I was certain that Marseille would be no different – in the past, it may have had a reputation for being a little rough around the edges, but this bustling metropolis now boasted a host of fascinating museums, delicious cuisine and endless charm.
For this trip, we’d chosen practical accommodation laced with a tangible elegance. The Citadines Castellane is nestled in the city’s 6th arrondissement, in a privileged central position and easily accessible by car; eternally useful when you’re entering the city by road. After unloading our belongings in the secure and private parking area, we were met by a smiling face at the reception desk and set off to discover the rest of the 97-apartment complex.
We’d opted for the Studio Apartment - cosy, compact and fitted with everything we could possibly need. Decorated in soothing colours, it had a contemporary feel that oozed modern taste. When we decided we fancied a night in instead of venturing out to sample the offerings of a local restaurant, our kitchen was fully equipped; a dishwasher, kettle, toaster and microwave, among other modern appliances, meant we could cook up a storm without even leaving our little haven of comfort.
Breakfasts, however, were a different matter; we took full advantage of the continental spread laid on by the complex, which we relished in enjoying on the sun-kissed terrace when the weather was fine. And we certainly needed to fuel ourselves up for the day ahead: the sprawling metropolis offered endless opportunities for sightseeing and entertainment, from the swanky boutiques of the République quarter to the winding streets of the Le Panier neighbourhood. The Citadines Castellane is the perfect central base in magical Marseille, and we’ll certainly be returning again soon!
