Mirage Fashion Hotel ★★★★

Central comforts and great service in one of Europe's most vibrant cities.

By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent
One of my closest friends announced her engagement soon after she had been away with her partner, now husband-to-be. It was going to be quiet and low key, but just to observe the traditional customs; we looked around for a suitable venue for an extremely small girls-only party – just three of us. We decided on Budapest, a place where none of us had really explored but whose vibrancy made it irresistible. In the centre was the perfect hotel, the Mirage Fashion Hotel ****, only a few minutes from Andrassy Avenue.

  • Matyó Design. This is a brilliant concept boutique run by two sisters who grew up in northern Hungary. They have taken the famous Matyó needlework and transformed it for the 21st century. No voluminous skirts and heavy embroidered vests, but jeans, T-shirts and other modern clothes and baby clothes. Brilliant! Ring the bell at No 27 for entry. XIII Radnóti Miklós utca 25, 2nd floor. • Gellért Baths. We didn’t quite have the nerve for a bath party, though there are plenty around. Instead, we went to the quieter Gellért Baths housed in an impressive art nouveau palace right by the river. This is one of the prettiest baths in Budapest, where you can lounge in the warm waters under a lovely stained-glass atrium. Kelenhegyi út 4, Budapest
