It’s no wonder the Costa Brava’s popularity has endured for so many years. You really do get the best of both worlds – you have all the fervour and vibrancy of Barcelona within arm’s reach, together with the perfect climate and total serenity that this lovely part of Catalonia affords. The Gran Hotel Monterrey *****, situated a mere 10 minutes from the glimmering waters of the coastline, is a luxury getaway complete with all the splendour and rural charm you’ve come to expect from the magnificent Costa Brava.
Despite speaking Spanish for many years now (and loving all things to do with Spain) I was frankly amazed at myself that I’d never graced the sublime shores of the Costa Brava until this trip to the Gran Hotel Monterrey ***** for a post-summer getaway. One thing I definitely didn’t expect when I arrived was how lush and green the whole complex would be – palm trees gently swaying in the breeze by the inviting aquamarine pool made me let go of stress I didn’t even know I had.
The luminous Superior Room I’d booked featured a sleek, minimalist design that echoed throughout the rest of the hotel; clean lines in cool earth tones gave the room a look which oozed contemporary chic, complemented by serene views of the Mediterranean Sea stretching far into the distance. At the Gran Hotel Monterrey ***** they really understood that the way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach, so with three restaurants on offer within the hotel (one of which, I hasten to add, serves up some seriously delicious award-winning gourmet food) you’re well and truly spoilt for choice.
If the stunning beaches just a hop, skip, and a jump (and a free shuttle from the hotel) weren’t already enough to guarantee my total and utter relaxation, the incredible spa was the icing on the cake. A wide range of spa treatments and rituals await to deliver your mind, body and soul into absolute tranquillity, leaving you feeling renewed and beautiful from the inside out. The Gran Hotel Monterrey ***** promises a perfect union of decadence and Catalonian rural charm – a must-visit destination for Costa Brava novices and experts alike.

Gran Hotel Monterrey ***** is located on the Costa Brava, in the beachside resort of Lloret de Mar, near the famous Fenals Beach and only 1 hour from Barcelona.
BY PLANE
Girona–Costa Brava Airport is the closest airport, located 30 minutes north of the hotel, but mainly served by a few low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair from London and Paris. More options are available when flying to Barcelona-El Prat Airport, around 1 hour 20 minutes' drive south west of the hotel.
HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL
From Girona Airport:
- By taxi: This is quite a convenient way to arrive, and the 30 minute taxi ride should cost between 35€ to 40€.
- By bus: buses run from the airport to Lloret de Mar taking around 35 minutes. It is then a 10 minute walk to the hotel.
From Barcelona Airport:
- By bus: buses run directly from Terminal 2 to Lloret de Mar taking around 2 hours, it is then 10 minutes' walk to the hotel.
- By car: car rental companies are readily available at the airport, although it is often cheaper to book online and in advance. Get on the E-15/ AP7 following signs to Girona. Take exit 9A-9B toward Port/Palamós and then keep right taking the C-63 to Lloret de Mar. On the approach into Girona, turn left along Av. Via de Blanes/GI-682. The hotel will be on your left after the first roundabout.
